  • WAIS

    Wide Area Information Servers:  A client/server software system that provides sophisticated indexing of files based on all words in each file and provides scoring and relevance feedback of documents to its client.  A prominent feature of WAIS is that the search results are ranked according to how relevant the hits are and thus refine the search process.

  • WAN

    Wide Area Network:  A computer network that spans a relatively large geographical area. Typically, a WAN consists of two or more local-area networks (LANs). Computers connected to a wide-area network are often connected through public networks, such as the telephone system.

  • Web

    World Wide Web:  A network of servers linked together by a common protocol, allowing access to millions of hypertext resources. It is also known as WWW, W3 and the World Wide Web.

  • Web page

    A document or file, written in HTML, that is stored on a web server and can be viewed over the Internet using an web browser.

  • Webcam

    A digital camera designed to take digital photographs and transmit them over the internet.

  • Website

    A location on the World Wide Web. Each website contains a homepage, which is the first document users see when they enter the site. The site might also contain additional documents and files. Each site is owned and managed by an individual, company, or organization.

  • WEP

    Stands for Wired Equivalent Privacy. It is a system of data encryption used in Wi-Fi technology to prevent access to, or observation of, the wireless network. WEP is not considered secure and there are a range of pre-existing software programs designed to break its encryption.

  • WiFi

    Stands for Wireless Fidelity. It is a local area network that uses high frequency radio signals to transmit and receive data over distances of a few hundred feet.

  • Wireless Adapter

    A device that adds wireless connectivity to a computer. Wi-Fi wireless adapters provide local area network (LAN) connectivity There are three types of wireless adapters: Wi-Fi, cellular and Bluetooth.

  • World Wide Web Consortium

    A non-profit body that develops specifications, guidelines, software and tools that further the potential of the Web. For more information, please visit http://www.w3.org.

  • Worm

    A virus that does not infect other programs. It makes copies of itself, and infects additional computers (typically by making use of network connections) but does not attach itself to additional programs; however a worm might alter, install, or destroy files and programs.

  • WWW

    An acronym which stands for "World Wide Web".
