How do I block email containing pictures or files?

Not all emails containing files and embedded images are from people you know. Viewing these files may cause you to inadvertently get a spyware, adware, or even a virus on your computer. To avoid this possibility, the AOL software offers a few ways for you to block embedded images and files in email.

Block mail with embedded images and hyperlinks

Your mail settings can be set to hide images and files in mail from unknown senders so that you can keep your computer protected from malicious content. This also allows you to control and select what emails containing images and hyperlinks you can view.

To block emails containing embedded pictures and files when using AOL Desktop v10.1 software:

1. Launch AOL Desktop v10.1.

2. On the AOL toolbar, click the Mail icon, sign in if prompted.

3. In the Mail window, click the Settings menu, then click Spam Controls.

4. Click the Edit Spam Controls button.

5. In the Spam Filters by Content: section, click the Block messages containing pictures or files box to place a check mark in it.

6. Click the Save button.

7. On the top-right corner of the browser window, click the X button.

8. In the Mail Settings window, click the Save button.

9. On the top-right corner of the Mail window, click the X button to close it.

To block emails containing pictures or files when using AOL 9.6, AOL 9.5, or AOL 9.1 or any version of AOL 9.0 software:

1. On the AOL toolbar, click the Settings icon.

2. Click the Index tab, then click Spam Controls.

3. From the drop-down list at the top of the window, select the screen name that you wish to prevent from receiving and sending pictures, files, and hyperlinks.

4. Next to the Content Filter, click the Edit link.

5. In the Contents Filter window, click the Block messages containing pictures or files box to put a check mark in it.

6. Click the Save button to close the Contents Filter window.

7. Click the Save button to close the Spam Controls window.

To set mail settings to block mail with embedded images when using AOL 6.0, AOL 7.0 or AOL 8.0:

1. On the AOL toolbar, click the Mail drop-down menu, then click Mail Preferences.

2. Click the Notify me before opening mail containing pictures box to put a check mark in it.

3. Click the Save button.

To set mail settings to block mail with embedded images and hyperlinks when using AOL 9.6, AOL 9.5, or AOL 9.1 or any version of AOL 9.0 software:

1. On the AOL toolbar, click the Settings icon.

2. Click the Index tab, then click Mail Settings.

3. Click the Hide images & disable hyperlinks in mail from unknown senders box to put a check mark in it.

4. Click the Save button.
