Enabling Windows Update on your computer

It’s always a good thing to keep your computer in tip-top shape with Windows Update. Windows Update, if enabled, will automatically check with Microsoft for any new or important operating system updates and download and install them accordingly. These updates will ensure that your computer runs smoothly and securely.

Before you start

You might want to print or save a copy of these instructions, as this page may not remain visible as you go through the following suggested steps.

You will also need to know the version of the Microsoft Windows operating system installed on your computer. You can find this information by following the instructions given in the online help article How do I determine the version of Windows I have?

Solutions

Enabling Windows Update for Windows 7/Vista

1. Click Start and then click Control Panel.

 

2. Open System and Security.

 

  • If you are using Windows 7, click the View by drop-down menu and then select Category. Click the System and Security icon.

 

 

  • If you are using Windows Vista, click the Control Panel Home link in the left panel and then click the Security icon.

 

3. Click Turn automatic updating on or off.

4. Select the Install updates automatically (recommended) option. Select the day and the time for the update.

5. Click OK and close all open windows. Windows Update is now turned on.

 

Enabling Windows Update for Windows XP

1. Click Start and then click Control Panel.

 

2. If you see Switch to Classic View in the left panel, click it, and then continue with the next step. However, if you see Switch to Category View, you are already in the classic view and can continue with the next step.

3. Click the System icon.

4. Click the Automatic Updates tab.

5. Select the Automatic (recommended) option. Select the day and time for the update.

6. Click OK and close all open windows.

 

Enabling Windows Update for Windows 2000/Me

1. Click Start, select Settings and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Automatic Updates icon.
3. Select the Automatic (recommended) option.
4. Click OK and close all open windows.

 

 

Downloading updates for Windows 98

1. Go to: windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
2. Click Scan for updates link.
3. Click the Review and Install Updates link.
4. Click Install Now.
