Clear cookies, cache, history and footprints

Whenever you visit websites, temporary internet files and cookies are stored on your computer to record your return visits. Sometimes, these temporary internet files and cookies can cause the issue you are experiencing. Your history list can be a similar concern. The longer the period of time you have specified for pages to save on your history list, the greater the disk space used on your computer. You can free disk space by clearing this list.

Note: Once you clear your cookies, cache, history and footprints, you may lose the following:

  • AOL Radio presets
  • Websites you have visited
  • Your shopping cart
  • Your customized pages

The instructions to clear your cookies, cache, history and footprints will differ depending on the browser you use. Please visit our help article Clear cookies, cache, history and footprints to learn how.

Run ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter

ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter are tools used for maintaining your computer's efficiency. These tools inform you about potential problems with your hard drive. ScanDisk scans the computer for infected files and fixes them to improve your computer's performance. Disk Defragmenter maintains your computer by consolidating data and helps you find information efficiently.

IMPORTANT: Do not perform Disk Defragmentation on a solid-state drive (SSD) as it may lower the life span of the drive. If you are unsure about the drive(s) in your computer, please contact your computer manufacturer.

Click the link corresponding to the version of Windows you have on your computer for instructions to run ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter on your computer.

Scan your computer for virus and spyware

If you have antivirus software, please run it to scan your computer. If you have McAfee Internet Suite - Special Edition from AOL, please read our help article Scan my computer for viruses using McAfee Security Center - Special edition from AOL to learn how to scan your computer using McAfee.
