Unable to install the AOL Desktop Software
If you are unable to install the AOL Desktop Software, try the solutions given below to resolve the issue. If the first solution does not solve the problem, try the following solutions in the order listed below.
Note: You may wish to print or save a copy of these instructions, as this page may not remain visible as you go through the suggested steps.
Information you need
Before you begin, you'll need to know the version of the Microsoft Windows operating system and the web browser installed on your computer. You can find this information by following the instructions given in the help articles Determining your version of Microsoft Windows and How do I determine my browser version?.
Ensure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements for the AOL Desktop Software you want before installing the software by checking our help article System requirements for AOL Desktop Software.
If you haven't restarted your computer since the issue started, or you don't restart your computer very often, we recommend that you restart your computer so that the internal memory is cleared.
To shut down and restart the computer:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Wait for 30 seconds after the computer is completely powered down. Restart the computer and then try to install AOL Desktop again.
Disk Cleanup helps free up space on your hard drive. It searches your hard drive for temporary files, internet cache files and unnecessary program files that you can safely delete. You can use Disk Cleanup to delete some or all of these files.
Please click the link corresponding to the version of Windows installed on your computer for instructions on how to delete files using Disk Cleanup.
To install the AOL Desktop Software from the desktop while in Safe Mode:
1. Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard, and then insert an AOL CD into the CD drive.
Note: Holding down the Shift key stops the CD from automatically starting.
2. Double-click the My Computer or Computer icon on your desktop.
3. Open Folder Options.
4. Click the View tab.
5. In the Hidden files or Hidden files and folders section, choose the Show hidden files and folders or Show all files option, and then click OK.
6. Right-click the TRYAOL (D:) icon, and then click Explore.
7. Double-click the AOL folder corresponding to the version you wish to install.
8. Right-click the setup file corresponding to the version of the AOL Desktop Software you wish to install, and then click Copy.
Note: Some CDs will not have all the options listed below. Choose the version of the software that is best suited for your computer.
9. Close all open windows by clicking X in the upper right corner of each window.
10. Right-click on the desktop, and then click Paste.
11. Shut down the computer.
12. Wait for 20 seconds after the computer is powered off, and then restart the computer. Continually press the F8 key on the keyboard until you receive the Windows Startup menu.
13. Select Safe Mode and then press Enter.
14. On the Windows desktop, double-click the SETUP file (e.g., SETUP90, SETUP80, and SETUP70) and follow the on-screen prompts.
Multiple programs may have been set to start automatically when your computer is turned on. These programs may cause the computer to slow down. Not all startup programs are essential for the proper functioning of your computer. For instructions to enable only the essential startup programs on your computer, please click the appropriate link from the ones given below, depending on the version of Windows that is installed on your computer.
If you are using Windows 2000, Me or 98, you will have to manually close all the programs that are currently running on your computer to resolve the issue. Please click the link corresponding to the version of Windows you have on your computer for instructions to close all programs.
Whenever you visit websites, temporary internet files and cookies are stored on your computer to record your return visits. Sometimes, these temporary internet files and cookies can cause the issue you are experiencing. Your history list can be a similar concern. The longer the period of time you have specified for pages to save on your history list, the greater the disk space used on your computer. You can free disk space by clearing this list.

ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter are tools used for maintaining your computer's efficiency. These tools inform you about potential problems with your hard drive. ScanDisk scans the computer for infected files and fixes them to improve your computer's performance. Disk Defragmenter maintains your computer by consolidating data and helps you find information efficiently.
IMPORTANT: Do not perform Disk Defragmentation on a solid-state drive (SSD) as it may lower the life span of the drive. If you are unsure about the drive(s) in your computer, please contact your computer manufacturer.
