How do I take a screenshot?

We've all heard the saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words." Taking a screenshot to illustrate or save what's shown on your computer is no exception. Whether you're using a PC, Mac, or other device, we have the instructions for you.

Please select a device below for more information on how to take a screenshot:


Taking a screenshot in Windows

Note: If you are using Windows 8, hold down the Windows Key and Print screen. The screenshot that you have taken will be found in the Pictures folder in your library.

1. Focus on the window or screen that you'd like to take a screenshot of.

2. On your keyboard, press Alt+Print Scrn.

3. Open Microsoft Paint. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint.

4. From the menu bar, click Edit and select Paste.

5. Once the screenshot is pasted, edit it accordingly.

6. From the menu bar, click File and select Save As. Save your screenshot to your desktop.

7. Once the screenshot is saved, you can attach it to your email or IM.


Taking a screenshot in Mac OS X

1. Focus on the window or screen that you'd like to take a screenshot of.

2. On your keyboard, press Command+Shift+4.

3. Select the window or screen that you'd like to take a screenshot of.

4. The screenshot will be saved to your desktop, with the time and date it was taken as the title.

5. Once the screenshot is saved, you can attach it to your email or IM.


Taking a screenshot on an iOS device

1. Navigate to the screen you'd like to take a screenshot of on your iOS device.

2. Press and hold the Home button and then press the Sleep/Power button. Your device's screen will flash white to confirm a screenshot has been taken. Screenshots are saved to your Camera Roll automatically.

3. Open your Camera Roll to view your screenshot.

4. If you would like to send someone your screenshot, press Forward and select from Email Photo, Message, or Tweet. You can also Assign to Contact, Use as Wallpaper, or Print.


Taking a screenshot on an Android device

IMPORTANT: Most Android devices do not have built-in screenshot functionality. We recommend the instructions below to advanced users only.

1. Visit developer.android.com/sdk/index.html.

2. Download, install, and configure the Android SDK on your computer. For more information on installing and configuring, please see developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html. During the installation and configuration process, make sure to enable USB Driver for Windows if you're using a Windows operating system.

3. Enable USB Debugging mode on your Android device. On the home screen, press Menu, select Applications > Development, and then enable USB Debugging.

4. Connect your Android device to your computer via USB cable.

5. Navigate to the screen you'd like to take a screenshot of on your Android device.

6. On your computer, navigate to the Android SDK > Tools folder and double-click ddms.bat. This will launch the Dalvik Debug Monitor Service.

7. From the menu bar, click Device and select Screen Capture. The current screen on your device will display on your computer.

8. Save the screenshot to your desktop.

9. Once the screenshot is saved, you can attach it to your email or IM.
