About the Online Timer

Important: AOL Screen Name is now known as AOL Username. You may still see Screen Name at some places as we are in the process of changing it across AOL. Please bear with us.

How much time should your kids spend on the Internet? It's entirely up to you. With Online Timer, you control the amount of time, hours during the day, or even days of the week that your kids can go online with AOL. Custom Daily Limits even allow you to select a different time limit for each day of the week. Online Timer settings can be set or changed only by the Adult account.

Online Timer limit information

You can limit the time your child spends online by using the Online Timer. You have the ability to assign time ranges that indicate when you want your child to be online. Click the link to see how you can set or modify the Online Timer.

Time limits

If your child uses the AOL software to access the Internet, they are limited to the amount of time you have allocated to their Username. If your child accesses the Internet through a third-party browser, be aware that the Online Timer and the Parental Controls settings will be enforced by the AOL Parental Controls software. Therefore, it is important to install the AOL Parental Controls software on every computer that your child uses to surf the Internet.

A child's ability to change limits I have set

Your child cannot change the time allotments you have set using the Online Timer. Only an Adult Username can edit or remove Online Timer settings.

Use Online Timer hour limits

After your child's online time expires for the day, he or she will not be able to surf the Internet until the next session of allotted online time begins. A notification appears when your child first signs on to AOL® Parental Controls displaying how much time is remaining for the day. In addition, your child can go to AOL® Keyword: Timer to see their remaining time for the day. Alternatively, he or she can right-click the AOL Parental Controls icon on the Systray menu, and then click the Remaining Time Online tab.

Note: This keyword can be accessed only within the AOL® software. However, the Keyword feature is not available in AOL Desktop.
