How do I update an address in my Address Book on the AOL software?

You can store email addresses, phone numbers (home, work, cellular, fax, and pager), mailing addresses (work and home), birthdays, anniversaries, and the home pages of all your friends on your Address Book in the AOL software.

How to

Manually add/edit contact information

To manually add contact information to your address book

1. On the AOL toolbar, click the Mail menu, and then click Address Book.

2. In the Address Book window, click Add.

3. The New Contact window appears. Type the first name and last name of your contact. Use the drop-down menu to the right of the Last Name box to select a category for the contact. Fill out the necessary information of your contact in the relevant boxes as explained below:

  • Contact: Enter your contact's email addresses, phone numbers, and nickname. Please note that the Screen Name box is only for AOL users. If your contact has an email address other than AOL, please use the Other E-mail box to type his/her email address.
  • Home: Enter the contact's home address if you wish to include this information.
  • Work: Enter the name of the company your contact works for. You can also choose the work email address as the primary email address of this contact by checking the box next to Use Work instead of Home as the primary postal address.
  • Details: Enter additional notes about your contact -- his/her birthday, anniversary, spouse's name, and any other family names.

To manually edit contact information in your address book

Note: Before editing the contact information of your buddy, check whether he/she has shared his/her address card with you. If your buddy has shared the address card with you, you will automatically receive updates every time your buddy updates his/her contact information. Automatic updates will override any edits that you make to your buddy's contact information. When your buddy shares his or her address card with you, an icon that looks like a white folder ( ) will be seen next to your buddy's contact information. The buddies who have not shared their address cards with you will have an icon that looks like a buddy waving at you ( ) next to their contact information.

1. On the AOL toolbar, click the Mail menu, and then click Address Book.

2. In the Address Book window, check whether the contact information that you want to edit is of a buddy who has shared his or her address card with you, and then click Edit. If the buddy has shared his or her address card with you, continue to Step 3. If not, skip to Step 4.

3. Please note that your edits to the address card will be overwritten when you buddy updates his/her address card. If you still want to edit the contact information, click Edit.

4. Edit the information under the Contact, Home, Work, or Details tab.

5. Once done, click Save.

6. Close all open windows.
