How do I attach files when sending emails via the AOL software?

You can attach any file to an email message and share it with friends. You can send up to a total of 25 MB of attachments per email, either as a single file, or as group of smaller files. The AOL software scans all attachments for virus infections.

Note: The recipient must have software that is compatible with your files. For example, if you send someone a WordPerfect file, your recipient must have either WordPerfect or a word processing program capable of opening WordPerfect files. Also, make sure the file is compatible with your recipient's computer, like a Macintosh machine may not be able to read some Windows files and vice versa.

Attach a single file to your email

If you send a single file attached to your email, it will not be automatically compressed.

To attach a single file to your email in AOL 9.6, AOL 9.5, AOL 9.1, or any version of AOL 9.0 software:

1. On the AOL toolbar, click Write.

2. Click Attach File.

3. Navigate to the folder that contains the file you want to attach.

4. Double-click the file you want to attach.

5. Address and compose the email, ensure the file being sent is not open, and then click Send Now or Send Later.

To attach a single file to your email using AOL 8.0 Plus or earlier or AOL for Mac OS X:

1. On the AOL toolbar, click Write.

2. Click Attachments.

3. Click Attach.

4. Navigate to the folder that contains the file you want to attach.

5. Double-click the file you want to attach.

6. Address and write the email, ensure the file being sent is not open, and then click Send Now or Send Later.

To attach a single file to your email using AOL Desktop v10.1:

1. On the AOL toolbar, click Mail. Sign in if prompted.

2. Click Write Mail.

3. Click the Attach drop-down menu, and then click Files.

4. Navigate to the folder that contains the file you want to attach, and then double-click it.

5. Address and write the email, ensure the file being sent is not open, and then click Send.


Attach multiple files to your email

If you attach multiple files, they will be zipped (compressed) into a single file by the AOL software before they are sent. The recipient of your email will need to unzip the files after downloading them. If the recipient is signed on to the AOL or CompuServe service, the files will be unzipped automatically after sign off or upon download. If the recipient of your email is using a different email service (for example: gmail), they may need special software to unzip or decompress the files before viewing or using them.

To attach multiple files to your email in AOL 9.6, AOL 9.5, AOL 9.1, or any version of AOL 9.0 software:

1. On the AOL toolbar, click Write.

2. Click Attach File.

3. Navigate to the folder that contains the file you want to attach.

4. Hold down the Ctrl key, and then click each item you want to select.

5. When you have finished, click Open.

Note: To detach files, click Detach File, click the file you want to detach to highlight it, and then click Detach.

6. Address and write the email, ensure the file being sent is not open, and then click Send Now or Send Later.

To attach multiple files to your email in AOL 8.0 Plus or earlier or AOL for Mac OS X:

1. On the AOL toolbar, click Write.

2. Click Attachments.

3. Click Attach.

4. Navigate to the folder that contains the file you want to attach.

5. Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, and then select each item from the list.

6. When finished click Open.

Note: To detach a file, click Attachments, click the file you want to detach to highlight it, and then click Detach.

7. Address and write the email, ensure the file being sent is not open, and then click Send Now or Send Later.

To attach multiple files to your email using AOL Desktop v10.1:

1. Click the Mail icon.

2. If prompted, type your screen name and password in the respective boxes, and then click Sign In.

3. Click Write Mail.

4. Click the Attach Files drop-down menu, and then click Files.

5. Navigate to the folder that contains the files you want to attach.

6. While you hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, click each file you would like to add.

7. When all the files have been selected, click Open.

Note: To remove an attached file, click the file you want to detach to highlight it, and then click Delete on your keyboard.

8. Address and write the email, ensure the files being sent are not open, and then click Send.
