Endless restart after installation of the AOL Desktop Software

The most common reason for a computer to endlessly restart after installing the AOL Desktop Software is a corrupted install or damaged installer. To resolve this, you will need to remove then reinstall the AOL Desktop Software in Safe Mode using an AOL CD.

Note: You may wish to print or save a copy of these instructions as this page may not remain visible as you go through the suggested steps.

Information You Need

You will need to know what version of the Microsoft Windows operating system is installed on your computer. If you do not know how to find this information, follow the instructions in the help article entitled How do I determine which version of Windows I have?.

Restart your computer in safe mode, remove the AOL Software, then restart the computer

To stop the computer from endlessly restarting, you will need to restart the computer in Safe Mode. This is a diagnostic mode with limited functionality that will allow you to remove the corrupted AOL Desktop Software and then start the computer normally. While in Safe Mode, the desktop will look much larger and have reduced color display capability. These changes in appearance and reduction in functionality will revert to the settings you are used to once the AOL Desktop Software is removed and the computer is restarted.

Note: You will need to acquire an AOL CD before trying to reinstall the AOL Desktop Software. If you need to use your computer, you can remove the AOL Desktop Software to stop the endless restart loop, but you will not be able to sign on to the AOL service until you get an AOL CD and reinstall the AOL Desktop Software.

To restart the computer in Safe Mode, then remove the AOL Desktop Software on Windows 7 or Vista:

1. Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock button, then click Restart.

2. While the computer restarts, continually press the F8 key on the keyboard (about once every second) until the Advanced Boot Options screen appears.

3. Using your keyboard, highlight the Safe Mode option, then press Enter.

4. If prompted to select operating system, select your operating system, then press Enter.

Note: If prompted with a confirmation window, click OK.

5. Click the Start button, then click Control Panel.

6. Click the Programs and Features icon.

7. Click AOL Uninstaller(Choose which Products to Remove), then click Uninstall/Change tab.

Note: If prompted by User Account Control window, click Continue.

8. On the AOL Uninstaller (Choose which Products to Remove) window, click the Search for Other Versions of AOL link. It will search for all the versions of AOL installed in the computer.

9. Click the box beside the AOL version you wish to remove to place a check mark in it, then click Uninstall.

10. Click Yes.

11. If prompted, click the Restart button to restart your computer.

To restart the computer in Safe Mode, then remove the AOL Desktop Software on Windows XP:

1. Click the Start button, then click the Turn Off Computer or Shut Down button.

2. Click the What do you want your computer to do? drop-down menu to open it, click the Restart option to select it, then click the OK button.

3. While the computer restarts, continually press the F8 key on the keyboard (about once every second) until the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen appears.

4. Using your keyboard, highlight the Safe Mode option, then press Enter.

5. If prompted to select operating system, select your operating system, then press Enter.

Note: If prompted with a confirmation window, click OK.

6. Click the Start button, then click Control Panel.

7. Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.

8. Click America Online or AOL Uninstaller (Choose which Products to Remove) to highlight it, then click Change/Remove.

9. Click the Search for Other Versions of AOL link.

10. Under Application Name click the boxes to place a check mark in them, then click Next.

11. Click Next.

12. Click Finish.

13. Click OK to restart the computer.

To restart the computer in Safe Mode, then remove the AOL Desktop Software on Windows 2000:

1. Click the Start button, then click Shut Down.

2. Click the What do you want your computer to do? drop-down menu to open it, click the Restart option to select it, then click OK.

3. While the computer restarts, continually press the F8 key (about once every second) until the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen appears.

4. Using your keyboard, highlight the Safe Mode option, then press Enter.

5. If prompted to select operating system, select your operating system, then press Enter.

Note: If prompted with a confirmation window, click OK.

6. Click the Start button, select Settings, then click Control Panel.

7. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

8. Click America Online or AOL Uninstaller (Choose which Products to Remove) to highlight it, then click Change/Remove.

9. Click the Search for Other versions of AOL link.

10. Under Application Name click the boxes to place a check mark in them, then click Next.

11. Click Next.

12. Click Finish.

13. Click OK to restart the computer.

To restart in Safe Mode, then remove the AOL Desktop Software on Windows 98 or Me:

1. Click the Start button, then click Shut Down.

2. Click the What do you want your computer to do? drop-down menu to open it, click the Restart option to select it, then click OK.

3. While the computer restarts, continually press the F8 key (about once every second) until the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen appears.

4. Using your keyboard, highlight the Safe Mode option, then press Enter.

5. If prompted to select operating system, select your operating system, then tap the Enter key.

Note: If prompted with a confirmation window, click the OK button.

6. Click the Start button, clickSettings, then click Control Panel.

7. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

8. Click America Online or AOL Uninstaller (Choose which Products to Remove) to highlight it, then click the Add/Remove button.

9. Click the Search for Other versions of AOL link.

10. Under Application Name click the boxes to place a check mark in them, then click the Next button.

11. Click the Next button.

12. Click the Finish button.

13. Click the OK button to restart the computer.


Reinstall the AOL Software

It is recommended that you exit all applications that are running, including shareware and freeware, while you install the AOL Desktop Software to avoid installation problems such as program conflicts and low system resources.
