How do I customize the way my AOL software starts?

You can customize the way your AOL software starts by using AOL start-up settings. For example, you can choose to launch the AOL software automatically every time you connect to the Internet.

Click the appropriate link depending on the version of your AOL software for instructions to customize the start-up settings of the software.

To customize the start-up settings on AOL 9.6, AOL 9.5, AOL 9.1, AOL 9.0 VR, or AOL 9.0 Security Edition

1. On the Windows taskbar, next to the clock, right-click the AOL icon, select the AOL #.# (where # is the number that denotes the version of the AOL software on your computer), and then click Start-Up Settings. The AOL software launches along with the AOL Fast Start window.

Note: If you don't see the AOL icon next to the clock, click the arrow next to the clock to reveal hidden icons. Please know that you can customize your Windows 8 or Windows 7 System Tray. For instructions, read our online help article Customize Windows 7/ Windows 8 System Tray.

2. In the AOL Fast Start window, select or clear the check boxes next to the appropriate settings to enable or disable the settings respectively. The options listed in the AOL Fast Start window depends on the version of the AOL software you have. You may see some or all of the options listed below displayed on your AOL Fast Start window. The function that each option performs when enabled is given below:

  • Enable Fast Start: The AOL software loads in the background when your computer starts. This allows the AOL software to launch quickly when required.
  • Open AOL when I am connected to the Internet: The AOL software launches automatically every time you connect to the Internet over either a broadband or a dial-up connection.
  • Show pop-up when Viewpoint Media Player is not installed: The AOL software displays a pop-up if Viewpoint Media Player is missing from your computer.
  • Show the Tip of the Day when I startup AOL: The Tip of the Day window appears when you launch the AOL software.
  • Automatically sign on with this screen name when I open AOL: The AOL software automatically signs on with the screen name displayed next to Screen Name. If the password for the screen name is not stored, enter the password in the Password box.
  • Always ask me to sign in when I startup AOL: The AOL Sign On screen appears every time you launch the AOL software.

Note: You can also choose the screen that you want displayed when you sign on to the AOL® service by clicking the Welcome Settings link. However, to do so, you'll need to be signed on to the AOL software.
