How do I install the AOL Desktop Software?

You can install the AOL Desktop Software by downloading the software from the internet, using an AOL CD or by using the AOL setup file on your computer from a previous installation.

Note: Before you install the AOL Desktop software, please check whether your computer meets the system requirements for the version of the AOL Desktop Software that you want to install.

If you do not have an AOL CD or access to the internet, skip to . The installation file will install the version of the AOL Desktop Software last installed on your computer. You can later upgrade your AOL Desktop Software by going to http://daol.aol.com/software.

Note: The AOL CD is no longer available at retail stores. However, you can burn your own CD with the AOL 9.7, AOL 9.0 VR setup files by using the BURN-YOUR-OWN-CD option. For more information, please read the help article BURN-YOUR-OWN-AOL-CD.

Install the AOL Desktop Software from the internet

Note: AOL Suite, AOL OpenRide and the AOL Desktop Software versions prior to AOL 9.0 VR are no longer available for download.


AOL 9.0 VR

1. Go to daol.aol.com/software/90vr.

2. Click Download Now.

3. Click Run.

4. Click Run again.

Note: If you are using Windows 7 or 8 or Vista, click Yes or Continue when prompted at the User Account Control window.

5. Close all open applications, and then click OK.

6. Click I Agree, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Note: If you are an existing member, the New Member Information window that requests your name, address and other details will not appear. If the window appears, updating the information in the window will lead to the creation of a new AOL account. Please read our help article Sign in to the AOL Desktop Software as a current member for instructions to sign in with your current Username.


 

AOL Desktop v10.1

1. Go to http://daol.aol.com/software/desktop10-1.

2. Click DOWNLOAD NOW.

3. Click Run.

4. Click Run again.

Note: If you are using Windows 7 or 8 or Vista, click Yes or Continue when prompted at the User Account Control window.

5. Click I Agree.

6. Click Continue.

7. Click Launch.


Install the AOL Desktop Software using AOL CD

When you insert an AOL CD into the CD drive, the CD automatically starts installing the latest version of the AOL Desktop Software compatible with your computer. If you wish to install a specific version of the AOL Desktop Software, go to the section.

Start by inserting an AOL CD into the CD drive and then follow the on-screen prompts.

Note: If you are an existing member, the New Member Information window that requests your name, address and other details will not appear. If the window appears, updating the information in the window will lead to the creation of a new AOL account. Please read our help article Sign in to the AOL Desktop Software as a current member.

Select the version of the AOL Desktop Software you wish to install

 

1. Insert the AOL CD. The CD automatically starts the installation. Close the installation window by clicking X in the upper right corner. If there is no X button or the installation window doesn't close in spite of clicking X, click the link corresponding to the version of Windows that you have on your computer for instructions on how to close the installation window, and then follow the instructions from :

2. Double-click the My Computer or Computer icon on your desktop.

3. Open Folder Options.

  • If you are using Windows Vista, click the Organize menu, and then click Folder and Search Options.

  • If you are using Windows XP, 2000, Me or 98, click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.

4. Click the View tab.

5. In the Hidden files or Hidden files and folders section, choose the Show hidden files and folders or Show all files option, and then click OK.

6. Right-click the TRYAOL (D:) icon, and then click Explore.

7. Double-click the AOL folder corresponding to the version that you wish to install.

8. Double-click the setup file corresponding to the version of the AOL Desktop Software that you wish to install, and then follow the on-screen prompts.

Note: Some CDs will not have all the options listed below. Choose the version of the software that is best suited to your computer.
