Sound settings in AOL Desktop v10.1

Choose the sound you want to play every time you send or receive IM (Instant Message), when your buddy signs in or signs out, or while receiving or disconnecting from talk sessions. Click the links below to take you to specific sound settings and click the numbers in the screenshot to learn more.

Note: If images in this article are different from what you see on your computer, you do not have the latest version of AOL® Desktop software. Please install the latest version of AOL Desktop v10.1 software.

Click the Edit menu, and then click Settings. Click the Sounds tab. Click each of the links below Sounds: to take you to specific sound settings.

Set IM & Chat Sounds


1. Disturbed by the sound played every time you receive an IM? Below When I receive an IM:, select the Do not play any sound option and receive IMs silently.


2. Want to listen to buddy sounds your buddies have set up when receiving IMs? Select the Play the Expressions Buddy Sound of any user option and enjoy your buddies' sounds.


3. Select a sound you want to play every time you receive an IM, click the Play this sound: option. Click Browse and select the file of your choice in the .wav or .mp3 format. Click Preview to listen to the selected sound.


4. Don't want to be disturbed by sound every time you send an IM? Below When I send an IM:, select the Do not play any sound option and send IMs in peace.


5. Want to play the sound same as your buddy's when sending IMs? Just select the Play my Expressions Buddy Sound option.


6. Customize the sound you listen to when sending IMs by selecting the Play this sound: option, and then click Browse. Select the file of your choice in the .wav or .mp3 format. Click Preview to listen to the selected sound.


7. Want the sounds you've set to play only on the first IM you receive or sent? Just check the Play sound only on the first message that I send and receive box.

Set Buddy List® Sounds


1. Wish you could turn off the sound played every time your buddies sign in? Below When buddies Sign In:, select the Do not play any sound option.


2. Play your buddies' sound settings when they sign in by selecting the Play the Expressions Buddy Sound of any user option and try to identify who logged in by their buddy sound.


3. Select to play the sound of your choice. Click the Play this sound: option, click Browse and select the file of your choice. It should be of the .wav or .mp3 file format. Click Preview to listen to the selected sound.


4. Don't want sound to be played every time your buddies sign out? Below When buddies Sign Out:, select the Do not play any sound option.


5. Select the Play the Expressions Buddy Sound of any user option and try to identify who logged out by just listening to the sound played.


6. Select the sound you want to play when your buddies sign out. Choose the Play this sound: option, click Browse to select the sound file of your choice. It should be of the .wav or .mp3 file format. Click Preview to listen to the selected sound.

Set Talk Sounds


1. Don't want any sound to be played when you receive a talk request or call alert? Below When receiving a Talk request or Call Alert:, select the Do not play any sound option.


2. Want to be alerted of a talk request or call alert? Choose the Play this sound: option, and then click Browse to select the sound you want to play. The sound file needs to be in the .wav or .mp3 format. Click Preview to listen to the selected sound.


3. Get disconnected from a talk or call session without a sound. Below When disconnecting from a Talk or Call session:, just select the Do not play any sound option.


4. Play the sound of your choice every time you disconnect from a talk or call session. Select the Play this sound: option, and then click Browse to select the sound you want to play. The sound file needs to be in the .wav or .mp3 format. Click Preview to listen to the selected sound.


5. Want an uninterrupted talk or video session? Check the Disable other AIM sounds when in a Talk or Video session box.
