AIM Chat 2.0 FAQs

In the new version of AIM® Chat, we've replaced the flash-based FDO interface with a Web-based html format for users of AOL® 9.0 and higher versions. The FDO interface, also known as the Classic Chat version, will still be available for AOL 8.0 and AOL 9.0 users who navigate directly to the FDO chat rooms.

FAQs

Can I still access Classic Chat?

Yes, you can. Simply click No thanks. Take me to the Classic Chat link at the bottom of the AIM Chat introduction page. You can also bookmark your favorite Classic Chat rooms.

Note: If you don't want to see the introduction page on your future visits to AIM Chat, select the Don't show this page in the future option.

What is new in the chat interface?

The new chat interface brings your online friends to life. For instance, to view their profile information, all you need to do is hover over their screen names or pictures. Also, the talk bubbles make it easier to keep track of the chat conversation. If someone types in more than one line, the chat bubble expands downwards.

Hover over a screen name along the left side of the page to see the available options:
  • IM – Click this link to IM the person you’ve selected.
  • PROFILE – Click this link to open the profile in a new window.
  • IGNORE – Click this link to ignore the troublemakers.

Note: The ignored users' screen names are italicized in the list. To bring them back into view, just scroll over them, and then click UNIGNORE.

  • REPORT – Click this link to report a user who violates the Terms of Service.

What is Media Sharing?

With AIM Chat 2.0, you can share videos, pictures, and other links with everyone in the chat room. As the links are shared, they are queued up in the playlist area below the player. You can view the 10 most recently shared items when you join a chat. If new items are shared while you chat, you'll see them appear in the playlist. Click an item to bring it into the player.

Note: If the video is a recognized video (e.g., a YouTube video), it will play in the chat. If it is not a recognized video, the URL will be displayed in the player. When you click the URL, it will open in a new window (or tab), so you can view the video and still remain in the chat.
