| Knowing the bit count version of your operating system helps you decide the version of software compatible with your computer.
How-To
To determine the bit count of Windows Vista® 1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
 2. Under System, next to System type, the operating system appears as follows:
- 64-bit Operating System (for the 64-bit version)

- 32-bit Operating System (for the 32-bit version)

To determine the bit count of Windows® XP 1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
 2. In the General tab, under System, the operating system appears as follows:
- Microsoft® Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version followed by the year (for the 64-bit version)

- Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version followed by the year (for the 32-bit version)
