How do I tell if my computer is running Windows 64 bit or 32 bit?

Knowing the bit count version of your operating system helps you decide the version of software compatible with your computer.

How-To

To determine the bit count of Windows Vista®
1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.

2. Under System, next to System type, the operating system appears as follows:
  • 64-bit Operating System (for the 64-bit version)

  • 32-bit Operating System (for the 32-bit version)

To determine the bit count of Windows® XP
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2. In the General tab, under System, the operating system appears as follows:
  • Microsoft® Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version followed by the year (for the 64-bit version)

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version followed by the year (for the 32-bit version)
