Close non-essential programs in Windows Me/98

The following solution will show you how to close out of all non-essential programs in Windows Me/98. Follow the steps below.

1. On the keyboard, hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys, and then tap the Delete key once. The Close Program window will open.

Note: Tapping the Delete key two times consecutively when the Ctrl and Alt keys are held down will restart your computer. The programs that were shut down previously will resume when the system restarts.

2. Click a program other than the required ones listed below to select it, and then click End Task.

Note: Please do not end the processes mentioned below, as they are required for the computer to function efficiently.

  • explorer
  • systray

3. Repeat step 2 until all the non-essential programs are closed, and then click X to close the window.

After trying all of the steps above and you are still experiencing issues, return to the previous article and continue troubleshooting.
