Managing third party security software

If you have more than one antivirus software program on your computer you will need to remove one. Follow the instructions below to help make sure that you are running an optimal set up on your computer.

Check for third party security software

When it comes to your computer's safety, even two's too much company. Accordingly, the McAfee Internet Security Suite software cannot be used in conjunction with other security products; you must uninstall your existing security software before installing McAfee Internet Security Suite.

To determine whether you have another security program running, choose from the following two options:

Option 1: Using the programs menu

  1. Click Start, then click All Programs or Programs.
  2. Review the programs in the list for any security software.
  3. If you find another security program on your computer, here's how to uninstall third-party security software.

Option 2: Search Add/Remove Programs

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Add/Remove or Add or Remove icon. 

    Note: If you're using Windows 7/Vista, click the Uninstall a Program or Program and Features link.

  3. Review the Currently Installed Programs list for any security programs.
  4. If you find another security program on your computer, see the FAQ below to uninstall third-party software.

Uninstall third party security software

Too many cooks in your computer's kitchen? Check, please! The McAfee Security Center software cannot be used in conjunction with other safety and security products. You must make a choice and decide whether to uninstall your existing security software and install McAfee Security Center, or call the whole thing off and continue using your existing security software.

If you decide to remove the third-party security software currently installed on your computer in order to use McAfee Security Center, make sure to install McAfee Security Center immediately afterward so that your computer remains protected at all times.

Based on which Windows operating system you're running, choose from the following uninstall options:

Uninstall third-party security software in Windows 7/Vista

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel

  2. Click the Programs icon. 

    If you are using Windows 7 and have Large icons or Small icons displayed next to View by, skip step 2.

    If you are using Windows Vista and the Control Panel is set to Classic, skip step 2.

  3. Double-click the Programs and Features icon.

  4. Click the third-party security software that you wish to remove, and then click Uninstall/Change.

    Note: If you are prompted with the User Account Control window, click Continue or Yes.

  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to uninstall the security software.
  6. When prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

Uninstall third-party security software in Windows XP/2000/Me/98

  1. Open Windows Control Panel

    If you are using Windows XP, click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    If you are using Windows 2000/98/Me, click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Click the Add or Remove Programs icon.

  3. Click the third-party security software that you wish to remove, and then click Change/Remove or Add/Remove.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to uninstall the security software.
  5. When prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.
