Run scandisk and disk defragmenter on my hard drive in Windows 8/7/Vista/XP

1. Click Start and then click Computer or My Computer.

Note: If you are using Windows 8, you can find the Start menu by pressing the Windows key on your keyboard.

2. Right-click Local Disk(C:) and then click Properties.

3. Click the Tools tab.

Click the appropriate link given below depending on whether you would like to run ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter.

Run ScanDisk

4. Under Error-checking, click Check Now or Check (for Windows 8).

Note: If prompted with the User Account Control window, click Continue or Yes.

5. Select the boxes next to Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, and then click Start. ScanDisk will begin.

Run Disk Defragmenter

Windows 8

4. Under Optimze and defragment drive, click Optimize.

Note: If prompted with the User Account Control window, click Yes.

5. Select the drive that you wish to defragment and then click Optimize. The system will analyze and defragment the drive to optimze the performance.

Windows 7

4. Under Defragmentation, click Defragment Now.

Note: If prompted with the User Account Control window, click Yes.

5. Select the drives that you wish to defragment and then click Defragment disk. Defragmentation will begin.

Windows Vista

4. Under Defragmentation, click Defragment Now.

Note: If prompted with the User Account Control window, click Continue.

5. Click Defragment now.

6. Select the check box(es) next to the disk(s) that you wish to defragment and then click OK. Defragmentation will begin.
