Uninstall AOL Connectivity Service 4.0 in Windows Vista/XP/7/8

Before uninstalling AOL Connectivity Service (ACS), close all open AOL programs on your computer. This can be done using the AOL Process Shut Down utility. Follow the instructions given below to run this utility and then uninstall ACS:

1. On the Windows taskbar, right-click the AOL icon, and then click System Information. If prompted, click Continue or Yes.

2. Click the Utilities tab.

3. Next to AOL Process Shut Down, click Start.

4. Click OK to start the AOL Process Shut Down utility.

5. Press any key on your keyboard. The AOL Process Shutdown utility will close all AOL processes, including AOL System Information.

6. Click Start, and then click Computer or My Computer.

Note: If you are using Windows 8, press the windows button on your keyboard or move your mouse to the bottom left of the screen and then click the Start window that you see. To locate Computer, press "C" on your keyboard.

7. Double-click the C: icon.

8. Double-click the Program Files folder.

9. Double-click the Common Files folder.

10. Double-click the aol folder.

11. Double-click the acs folder.

12. Double-click the uninst.exe file. If prompted, click Allow or Yes.

Notes:

  • If you are using Windows 8 and you cannot find uninst.exe file, click View on the menu bar and then click the Hidden items checkbox.
  • If you are using Windows 7 or Vista and you cannot find uninst.exe file, at the top left, click Organize, and then click Folder and Search Options. On the Folder Options window, click the View tab. Under Hidden files and folders, choose the Show hidden files and folders option, and then click OK. Now, double-click the uninst.exe file. If prompted, click Allow or Yes.
  • If you are using Windows XP and you cannot find uninst.exe file, click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. On the Folder Options window, click the View tab. Under Hidden files and folders, choose the Show hidden files and folders option, and then click OK. Now, double-click the uninst.exe file. If prompted, click Allow or Yes.

13. Click OK.

Note: Do not start the AOL Desktop Software.

14. Click X to close the window.

15. Click Start, and then click Computer or My Computer.

16. Double-click the C: icon, double-click the Program Files folder, double-click the Common Files folder, and then double-click the AOL folder.

17. Double-click the Backup folder.

Note: If there is no Backup folder, you can install ACS using an AOL CD. To do so, insert the AOL CD into the CD drive. The CD automatically starts the installation of the AOL Desktop Software. Close the installation window by clicking X on the upper right of the window. Click Start, and then click My Computer or Computer. Right-click the TRYAOL (D:) icon, and then click Explore. Double-click the AOL X.X folder (where X.X denotes the version of the AOL Desktop Software). Double-click the COMPS folder, and then skip to Step 20.

18. Double-click the ACS folder.

19. Double-click the Rollback folder.

20. Double-click the acssetup.exe file, and then follow the on-screen instructions. If prompted, click Continue or Yes.

Note: If you cannot find the acssetup file in the above-mentioned folder, look for the file in:

  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\aol\Backup\ACS\Current\US

    OR

  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\aol\Backup\ACS\Current\Suite\setup.exe

    OR

  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\aol\Backup\ACS\Rollback\Suite\setup.exe.

You will not receive any message stating that the reinstallation of ACS is complete. Wait until the hourglass disappears.

21. Restart your computer.

Notes:

  • If you are using Windows 8, click Start and then click Restart Machine icon.
  • If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, click Start, click the arrow next to Lock this computer or Shut down, and then click Restart.
  • If you are using Windows XP Home Edition, click Start, click Turn Off Computer, and then click Restart.
  • If you are using Windows XP Pro, click Start, click Shut Down, and then click the What do you want the computer to do? drop-down menu to open it. Now, choose the Restart option by clicking it, and then click OK.

22. Start the AOL Desktop Software. If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, right-click the AOL icon, and then click Run as administrator.

23. Click Yes. If prompted, restart your computer, and then start the AOL Desktop Software. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up a new connection location.
