Disable call waiting when online

The telephone feature Call Forward Busy is required for AOL Call Alert/AOL Voicemail in order to notify you of incoming calls. For this feature to function properly, you need to disable your call-waiting feature using the AOL Desktop Software. If the feature is not disabled, your callers will hear a continuous ringing tone when you are online.

Note: The call-waiting feature on your telephone will be enabled automatically when you go offline.

Note: You may wish to print or save a copy of these instructions, as this page may not remain visible as you go through the suggested steps.

Click on the link below that corresponds to your version of the AOL Desktop Software and follow the steps listed to disable call waiting.


To disable call waiting in AOL 9.0 Security Edition or higher:

1. On the AOL Sign On screen, click the Connect Options button.

2. Click the location associated with the dial-up connection to select it, then click the Edit button.

3. Next to Do you have call waiting? (or Call Waiting), click the Yes option.

Note: If your phone company uses a code other than *70, type the appropriate code in the Enter Number: box. Please refer to your telephone directory for the correct code.

4. Click Next click here.

5. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete.

To disable call waiting in AOL 9.0 Optimized/Optimized SE/LE:

1. On the AOL Sign On screen, click the Sign On Options button.

2. In the Location: drop-down menu, ensure the location name for the dial-up connection is selected, then click Edit Numbers.

3. Click Dialing Options.

4. Click the I have to dial this number to turn off call waiting: box to place a check mark in it.

Note: By default, *70 is the code to disable call waiting. If a different call waiting code is used, type the number here. Please refer to your telephone directory for the correct code.

5. Click OK.

6. Click Next.

7. Click Sign on to AOL now.

To disable call waiting in AOL 8.0 and AOL 7.0:

1. On the AOL Sign On screen, click Setup.

2. Click Expert Setup.

3. Click the access phone number you wish to disable call waiting for, then click Edit.

4. Click the Dial *70, to disable call waiting. box to place a check mark in it.

Note: By default, this number is *70. If a different call waiting code is used, type the number here. Please refer to your telephone directory for the correct code.

5. Click OK.

Note: Repeat steps 3 to 5 to disable call waiting for each of the access phone numbers.

6. Click Close to close the Connection Setup window.

To disable call waiting in AOL for Mac:

1. In the AOL Welcome screen, click Setup.

2. Click Expert Setup.

3. Click the access phone number you want to disable call waiting for, then click Edit.

4. Click Location Dialing Options.

5. Click the Dial *70, to turn off call waiting box to place a check mark in it.

Note: The code to disable call-waiting may vary depending on your phone service and where you live. Please refer to your telephone directory for the correct code.

6. Click OK.

7. Click OK.

8. Click the red button to close the AOL Setup window.
