AOL® Parental Controls

AOL® Parental Controls are designed to help parents who have a high-speed Internet connection or who connect to the AOL® software via another ISP's modem connection. When the AOL® Parental Controls software is installed on your computer, your child will be able to surf the Internet and visit age-appropriate Web sites based on his/her age group. The software enforces the AOL Parental Controls protections even when the child is not using the AOL client software, keeping them protected when they use an external browser like Microsoft® Internet Explorer or Netscape® Navigator. All users must sign-in to AOL Parental Controls before going online. Requiring password access to Internet-related programs reduces the risk of children encountering potential threats or inappropriate websites while online.

Note: To set up Parental Controls and download the AOL® Parental Controls software on Windows® Vista® operating system using AOL® 9.0 VR Refresh, go to your Vista User Control page, then click the link, which will direct you to AOL® Web site.

About AOL® Parental Controls

After you install the AOL® Parental Controls software on your computer, anyone who attempts to use an application that accesses the Internet from your computer will be asked for their AOL® screen name or the email address used to register them for AOL® Parental Controls and password so that we can determine if it is a parentally controlled screen name (Kids Only, Young Teen or Mature Teen) and apply the appropriate rules.

AOL Parental Controls on More than One Computer

If you have children who may be using additional computers for Web surfing and you want the protection of AOL Parental Controls, you will need to install the AOL® Parental Controls software on each computer.
