White screen while accessing AOL Games

Sometimes, you may see a white window or white screen while trying to access AOL® Games. Listed below are some solutions to resolve the issue. After trying the first solution, check whether the issue is resolved. If the issue persists, continue using the suggested solutions until the problem is fixed.

You may wish to print or save a copy of these instructions as this page may not remain visible as you go through the suggested steps.

Information you need

You will need to know the version of the Microsoft® Windows® operating system installed on your computer. If you do not know how to find this information, follow the instructions in the online help article How do I determine the version of Windows I have.

Solutions


Adjust browser settings

Open Internet Options located in your Control Panel window and adjust your Auto-detection settings.

Adjust Internet Settings in Windows Vista®
1. Click Start, click Control Panel.
2. Click the Network and Internet icon.

Note: If Control Panel is set to Classic View, double-click the Internet Options icon.

3. Click the Internet Options icon.
4. Click the Connections tab.
5. Click LAN settings.
6. Click the Automatically detect settings box to clear it, and then click OK.

Note: If you have a proxy server configured, the program will not function properly. Try connecting directly to the Internet and not to a proxy server.

7. In the Internet properties window, click the General tab.
8. In the Browsing history section, click Settings.
9. In the Check for newer versions of stored pages section, choose the Every time I visit the webpage option by clicking it, and then click OK.
10. In the Browsing history section, click Delete.
11. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.
12. In the Internet properties window, click the Security tab, and then click Default level.
13. In the Internet properties window, click the Privacy tab, and then click Default.
14. Click OK to close the Internet properties window.

Adjust Internet Settings in Windows XP/2000/Me/98
1. Open the Internet Properties window:

  • In Windows 98/Me/2000, click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click the Internet Options icon.
  • In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click the Internet Options icon.

Note: If Control Panel is set to Category View, click the Network and Internet icon, and then click Internet Options.

2. Click the Connections tab.
3. Click LAN settings.
4. Click the Automatically detect settings box to clear it, and then click OK.

Note: If you have a proxy configured, the program will not function properly. Try connecting directly to the Internet and not to a proxy server.

5. In the Internet properties window, click the General tab.
6. In the Temporary Internet files section, click Settings.
7. In the Check for newer versions of stored pages section, choose the Every visit to the page option by clicking it, and then click OK.
8. In the Temporary Internet files section, click Delete Files.
9. Check the Delete all offline content box, and then click OK.
10. In the Internet properties window, click the Security tab, and then click Default Level.
11. In the Internet properties window, click the Privacy tab, and then click Default.
12. Click OK to close the Internet properties window.

Temporarily disable your firewall or configure McAfee

There may be a firewall or other security software on your computer that is preventing you from accessing AOL, AIM, or the Internet. You can temporarily disable your firewall or other security software to check whether the firewall is blocking access to AOL, AIM, or the Internet. Examples of firewall software are ZoneAlarm®, Norton Internet Security™, and McAfee® Internet Security Suite - Special edition from AOL.

To disable other third-party firewall, refer to our article Disable third-party firewall. If you are using McAfee Internet Security Suite - Special edition from AOL, you can configure the firewall by following the steps given below:

To configure McAfee Internet Security Suite - Special edition from AOL, do the following:

1. In the Windows taskbar, next to the clock, right-click the M icon, and then click Open SecurityCenter.

Note: Alternatively, you can click Start, select All Programs or Programs, select McAfee, and then click McAfee SecurityCenter.

2. In Advanced Menu, click the Configure tab.

Note: If you are unable to see the Configure tab, click the Advanced Menu link, and then click the Configure tab.

3. In the Configure pane, click the Internet & Network link.

4. In the Firewall protection section, click Advanced.

5. In the left pane, click the Program Permissions link.

6. From the Program Permissions list, ensure that the application you are trying to use has Full Access. If the application is Blocked, click the application for which you want to grant full access.

7. In the Action section, click the Allow Access link.

Note: Please ensure that the application you are using is not being blocked. If it is not blocked, the issue is not related to the firewall.

8. Click OK.

9. Click X to close the McAfee SecurityCenter window.

Run Quick Restore

The Quick Restore feature allows you to reset the AOL® software to the default state by deleting all the updates downloaded in the past. It can help resolve issues that you may be having with your AOL software without having to reinstall the software. Please ensure that the AOL software is closed before you perform the steps given below. In order to ensure that you have the most current version of the AOL software, we will send you a series of updates upon each sign off. Learn more about the AOL software updates.

Notes:

  • Quick Restore cannot be run on the AOL Desktop software. If you are using the AOL Desktop software, please use alternative steps.
  • After running Quick Restore, the AOL software may prompt you to select your default Web application. Further, some Web applications may need to be reset. However, Favorite Places and e-mail saved in the Personal Filing Cabinet will not be lost.
1. Click Start, select Programs or All Programs, select America Online or AOL, and then click AOL System Information.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, click Continue.

2. On the left of the AOL System Information 2.0 window, click the AOL Software tab.

3. Click Quick Restore.

4. Click OK.

5. Once Quick Restore is complete, click Close.

6. Click X to close the AOL System Information 2.0 window.

7. Launch the AOL software and sign on.

Notes:

  • If the Screen Name box shows Existing Member, click Sign On. You will be prompted to enter your screen name and password. The next time you sign on, all the screen names on your AOL account will appear on the sign on screen.
  • If you do not see the Password box, click the Screen Name drop-down menu to open it, and then select another screen name from the list. Once you have selected a different screen name, the Password box should reappear. You can then select any screen name from the drop-down menu to sign on.

Run Windows update

You can set your computer to automatically download Windows updates at a specified time. Just make sure that your computer is turned on and connected to the Internet at that time. Please note that your computer may slow down while downloading the updates. Therefore, AOL recommends you to update your Windows software when you are not actively using your computer.

Turn on Windows Automatic Update via AOL® One-click Fixes
1. Click Start, select Programs or All Programs, select AOL, and then click AOL Computer Check-Up.

Notes:

  • If you are using Windows Vista, you will be prompted to click Continue on the User Account Control window.
  • If you have not installed AOL® Computer Check-Up, follow the instructions in the online help article Install AOL Computer Check-Up.

2. If prompted, sign in with your AOL screen name and password.
3. Under Other Support Tools, click the One-click Fixes link.

4. On the Most Common tab, next to Turn on Windows Automatic Update, click Fix It For Me.

5. Click Continue.
6. Click Done.

Turn on Automatic Updates for Windows Vista
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click the Security icon, and then click the Windows Update icon.

Note: In Windows Vista Classic View, double-click the Windows Update icon.

3. Click the Change settings link.
4. Choose the Install updates automatically (recommended) option by clicking it.
5. Click OK. Close all open windows.

Turn on Automatic Updates for Windows XP
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon.

Note: In Windows XP Category View, click the Performance and Maintenance icon, and then click the System icon.

3. Click the Automatic Updates tab.
4. Choose the Automatic (recommended) option by clicking it.
5. Click OK. Close all open windows.

Turn on Automatic Updates for Windows 2000/Me
1. Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Automatic Updates icon.
3. Choose the Automatic (recommended) option by clicking it.
4. Click OK. Close all open windows.

Download updates for Windows 98
1. Go to: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
2. Click Scan for updates link.
3. Click the Review and Install Updates link.
4. Click Install Now.
