Message: “We Were Unable to Apply Your Latest Virus Protection Update.”

Important:AOL® Safety and Security Center is no longer supported and does not receive security updates. Without up-to-date security protection, your computer is more vulnerable to online threats. To help protect your computer from viruses, spyware and hackers, it is important to go to http://safety.aol.com to upgrade to the latest security products from AOL.

You may receive the message: "We were unable to apply your latest Virus Protection update" for any one of several reasons. After trying the first solution, check to see if you are continuing to receive the same message. If you are still experiencing the same difficulty, continue using the suggested solutions until the problem is fixed.

You may wish to print or save a copy of these instructions as this page may not remain visible as you go through the suggested steps.

Information You Need

You will need to know what version of the Microsoft® Windows® operating system is installed on your computer. If you do not know how to find this information, follow the instructions in the online help article entitled How to Determine Which Version of Windows® I Have.

Solutions


Delete the Update and DAT Folders, Then Restart the Computer

This issue is sometimes caused by a corrupted Update or DAT folder used by the McAfee® VirusScan® Online software. You can correct this by deleting the Update and DAT folders.

To delete the Update and DAT folders, and restart the computer using Windows XP:
1. On the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
2. Click the Tools menu, then click Folder Options....
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the Advanced Settings: section, under Files and Folders, choose the Show hidden files and folders option by clicking it, then click the OK button.
5. Double-click the Local Disk (C:) icon.
6. Double-click the Program Files folder.
7. Double-click the Mcafee.com folder.
8. Double-click the Antivirus folder.
9. Right-click the DAT folder, then click Delete.
10. Click the Yes button.
11. Click the X in the upper right to close the Antivirus window.
12. On the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
13. Double-click the Local Disk (C:) icon.
14. Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
15. Double-click the folder with the same name as your Windows username.
16. Double-click the Application Data folder.
17. Double-click the AOL folder.
18. Double-click the Safety and Security folder.
19. Right-click the Update folder, then click Delete.
20. Click the Yes button.
21. Click the Start button, then click Turn off Computer....
22. Click the Restart button.

To delete the Update and DAT folders, and restart the computer using Windows 2000:
1. On the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
2. Click the Tools menu, then click Folder Options....
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the Advanced Settings: section, under Files and Folders, click the Show hidden files and folders option to select it, then click the OK button.
5. Double-click the Local Disk (C:) icon.
6. Double-click the Program Files folder.
7. Double-click the Mcafee.com folder.
8. Double-click the Antivirus folder.
9. Right-click the DAT folder, then click Delete.
10. Click the Yes button.
11. Click the X in the upper right to close the Antivirus window.
12. On the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
13. Double-click the Local Disk (C:) icon.
14. Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
15. Double-click the folder with the same name as your Windows username.
16. Double-click the Application Data folder.
17. Double-click the AOL folder.
18. Double-click the Safety and Security folder.
19. Right-click the Update folder, then click Delete.
20. Click the Yes button.
21. Click the Start button, then click Shut Down....
22. Click the What do you want your computer to do? drop-down menu to open it, select Shut down, click it, then click the OK button.

Delete the Cache, Cookies and History

Another possible cause for this issue is corrupted temporary Internet files. You can correct this issue by running the Windows Disk Cleanup software.

Whenever you visit certain Websites, they will store what is known as temporary Internet files and cookies on your computer to identify that Website. Sometimes these temporary Internet files and cookies can cause the issue you are experiencing. Similarly your History list can also be a concern. The more days you have specified for pages to be saved on your history list, the more disk space is used on your computer. You can free up disk space by clearing this list.

To clear cache, cookies and history for Internet Explorer® 7.0:
1. Close any Internet browser windows that may be open on your computer.
2. Click the Start button, select All Programs, then click Internet Explorer.
3. In the upper right, click the Tools menu, then click Internet Options.
4. On the General tab, under the Browsing history section, click the Delete... button.
5. Under the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete files... button to clear the cache.
6. Click the Yes button to confirm.
7. Under the Cookies section, click the Delete cookies... button, to clear cookies.
8. Click the Yes button to confirm.
9. Under the History section, click the Delete history... button to clear history.
10. Click the Yes button to confirm.
11. In the lower right, click the Close button to close the Delete Browsing History window.
12. Click the X button in the upper right to close the Internet Options window.

To clear cache, cookies and history for Internet Explorer 6.0:
1. Close any Internet browser windows that may be open on your computer.
2. Click the Start button, select Programs or All Programs, then click Internet Explorer.
3. Click the Tools menu, then click Internet Options....
4. On the General tab, under the Temporary Internet files section, click the Delete Files... button to clear cache.
5. Under the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete files... button to clear the cache.
6. Click the OK button for confirmation.
7. Under the Temporary Internet files section, click the Delete Cookies... button to clear cookies.
8. Click the OK button to confirm.
9. Under the History section, click the Clear History button to clear history.
10. Click the Yes button for confirmation.
11. Click the OK button to close the Internet Options window.

Uninstall the AOL Safety and Security Center

To uninstall the AOL Safety and Security Center using Windows XP:
1. Click the Start button, then click Control Panel.
2. Click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
3. Click the AOL Uninstaller, then click the Change/Remove button.
4. Click the boxes next to each AOL Safety and Security Center component to place check marks in them, then click the Uninstall button.

Note: The AOL Safety and Security Center components being listed depends on which components are currently installed.

5. Click the Yes button.
6. Click the Restart button.

To uninstall the AOL Safety and Security Center using Windows 2000:
1. Click the Start button, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
2. Click theAdd/Remove Programs icon.
3. Click AOL Uninstaller, then click the Change/Remove button.
4. Click each box next to each AOL Safety and Security Center component to place check marks in them, then click the Uninstall button.

Note: The AOL Safety and Security Center components being listed depends on which components are currently installed.

5. Click the Yes button.
6. Click the Restart button.
