You may receive the message “AOL has encountered an internal
error. Please restart the software or restart your computer.
Error: SL-4041”, while using AOL® Desktop software. This is
normally caused by a temporary outage so the service should be
available again shortly. Note: If you receive any other code, please see the help article titled Message: "AOL Has Encountered an Internal Error...the Software or Restart Your Computer".
You may wish to print or save a copy of these instructions as this
page may not remain visible as you go through the suggested steps.
Solutions
Restart Your Computer
Restarting your computer will refresh the resources the AOL
Desktop software needs to run correctly.
To restart your computer:
1. Save any open documents and close open programs.
2. Restart the computer. - If using Windows® Vista®, click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock this computer button, then click Restart.
- If using Windows XP Home Edition, click the Start
button, then click the Turn Off Computer
button. Click the Restart button.
- If using Windows XP Pro, click theStart button, then click
Shut Down. Click the What do you want the computer to do? drop-down menu to open it, choose the Restart option by clicking it, then click the OK button.
3. When the computer is restarted, click the Start button, click All
Programs, click AOL, then clickAOL Desktop.
4. On the upper-right of the AOL Desktop software, click the Sign In link.
5. Enter your screen name and password, then click theSign In button.Back to Top
Determine If Your Computer Meets
Minimum System Requirements
If your computer does not meet the minimum system requirements,click here to install the classic version of AOL® software. System requirements for the AOL Desktop: - Windows® XP or Windows Vista™ (both 32-bit and 64-bit are supported)
- Processor:
- Windows XP: Minimum Pentium® I or equivalent processor (1GHz Pentium® II processor recommended)
- Windows Vista: Pentium® 4 processor and above or AMD Athlon™ 3000+ processor and above
- RAM:
- Windows XP: Minimum 128 MB RAM (256 MB recommended)
- Windows Vista: 512 MB RAM
- 205 MB of free hard drive space
- Internet Explorer® 6.0 or higher
- 1024 x 768 screen resolution
- Internet Connection
To determine if your computer meets minimum system
requirements:
1. On the Windows taskbar next to the clock, click the AOL® icon, then click System Information. 
2. Under System Info section, compare the system
details to the requirements listed above.
3. Click the X to close the AOL System Information 2.0 window.
