How do I start my own AOL Chat with AOL Desktop software?

If you join a chat room and find it's not quite what you're looking for, you can start a chat room of your own. You can start a member chat, which is listed in the public chat directory, or you can start a private chat, that only those you notify will know about.

Note: If the images are different from what you see on your computer, you do not have the latest version of AOL® Desktop software. Please install the latest version of AOL Desktop software.

Create a Public Chat Room

A public chat room is listed in the AOL® Chat Room Listings directory and any AOL® member can access it.

To create a public chat room:
1. Go to AOL® Keyword: Chat Room Listings.

2. Click the Start Your Own Chat link.

3. Click the Member Chat link.

4. Select the desired chat category.

5. In the Enter Chat Name: box type the name you want for your chat room.

6. Click Go Chat.
