AOL Desktop Message:“502 Connection Failed”

You may receive the message "Error: 502 Connection Failed" while using AOL® Desktop for any one of several reasons. After trying the first solution, check to see if you can open or sign in to AOL® Desktop software. If you still receive the message, continue using the suggested solutions until the problem is fixed.

Reset Internet Explorer® Security Settings

The Web browser's Security Settings tab lets you regulate security for local sites, trusted sites, and restricted sites. All other sites are grouped into a general Internet zone.

To reset Internet Explorer security to the default settings:
1. Click the Start button, then click Internet Explorer.
2. Click the Tools menu, then click Internet Options.
3. Click the Security tab.
4. Click the Default Level button, then click the OK button.

Download Java Virtual Machine

The Java Virtual Machine technology allows certain types of programs, called Java® applications or Java applets, to run on Windows-based computers.

To download Java Virtual Machine:
1. Go to http://www.java.com/getjava.
2. Click the FREE JAVA DOWNLOAD button.

Note: If using Windows® Vista®, click the Continue button .

3. If a warning box appears, click the Install button.

Note: If a warning appears asking if you wish to grant a Java® program access to the Internet, click the Grant Access link. If a warning appears asking if you wish to grant Windows® Installer access to the Internet, click the Grant Access link.

4. Click the Accept button.
5. Click the Finish button.
6. Click the Verify Installation button to determine if the installation was successful.
7. A Congratulations! message should appear where the Verify Installation button was located.
8. Click the X button in the upper right corner to close the browser window.
