| You may receive the message "General Error" in AOL® Desktop for any one of several reasons. After trying
the first solution, check to see if you can use the software
normally. If you are still receiving the message, continue
using the suggested solutions until the problem is fixed.
You may wish to print or save a copy of these instructions as this page may not remain visible as you go through the suggested steps.

Try to open AOL Desktop again by double-clicking
the associated icon on the desktop. Back to Top
Shut Down All AOL Programs
Shut down all the AOL programs that are currently running on the
computer.
To shut down all AOL programs:
1. On the Windows® taskbar next to the clock, right-click the
AOL icon, then click System Information.
2. Click the Utilities tab.
3. In the AOL Utilities section, underClose All AOL Programs, click theClose AOL button.
4. Click the OK button.
5. Click the X button in the upper right
to close the System Information 2.0 window. Back to Top
Restart the Computer
Restarting your computer will refresh the files and folders in
Windows and may help to resolve the issue you are having.
To restart the computer:
1. Shut down the computer: - If using Windows® Vista®, click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock this computer. button, then click Shut Down.
- If using Windows XP Home Edition, click the Start button, then click the Turn Off Computer button. Click the Turn off button.
- If using Windows XP Pro, click the Start button, then click Shut Down. Click the What do you want the computer to do? drop-down menu to open it, choose the Shut down option by clicking it, then click the OK button.
2. Wait 30 seconds.
