Message: “Connection Status Unknown: Server ...” after installing AIM software

If you're receiving the message “Connection Status Unknown: Server Execution Failed” after installing AIM® software on your Windows® Vista® computer, please follow all the instructions below in the order provided to resolve the issue.

You may wish to print or save a copy of these instructions as this page may not remain visible as you go through the suggested steps.

Information You Need

You will need to know what version of the Microsoft® Windows® operating system is installed on your computer. If you do not know how to find this information, follow the instructions in the online help article entitled How to Determine Which Version of Windows® I Have.

Steps


Step 1: Uninstall the AIM software

1. Click the Start button, then click Control Panel.

2. Under Programs click the Uninstall a program link.

Note: If using the Classic View, click the Programs and Features icon.

3. Click the AIM software once to highlight it, then click the Uninstall/Change button.

4. When the User Account Control window appears, click the Continue button.

5. Click the OK button to confirm the uninstall process.

6. Depending on whether personal data like screen names, etc from the AIM® software is required by the member or not, click either the Yes or the No button.

7. Once the uninstall process is complete, click the Close button.

8. Click the OK button to exit the AIM 6.0 Uninstall window.

9. Restart the computer as you normally would.

Step 2: Enable User Account Control (UAC)

Enable User Account Control (UAC)

1. Once the computer is restarted, click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

2. Click User Accounts and Family Safety.

3. Click User Accounts.

4. Click the Turn User Account Control on or off link.

5. Check the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer box, and then click the OK button.

6. When prompted to restart your computer, click the Restart Now button.

Step 3: Download the Microsoft Windows Vista Update

1. Click to download the update that is applicable for your computer: 2. Click the Continue button to proceed with the download.

3. Click the Download plug-in button, and then follow the onscreen prompts to download the update. Once the download is completed, click the Finish button.

Note: The download should take less than a minute if you are using a high-speed Internet connection.

Step 4: Reinstall AIM Software

Note: The AIM® software is available through an online download only.

1. Go to http://download.aim.com/client/68 and then click the Install Now button.

3. Click the Run button.

3. If prompted, click Run again.

4. In the AIM 6 INSTALLATION window, click the I Agree button.

5. Select the installation option you like, and then click Next.

6. A new screen will now show the progress of installation. Please wait for it to complete.

7. Once installation is complete, AIM 6.8 will present to you a host of additional options to enhance your IM experience! Choose the desired option, and then click the Next button.

8. You have now successfully installed the AIM 6.8 software. Click Launch to begin using it!.
