Clear cache, cookies, and history

Web sites, when visited, store files known as temporary Internet files and cookies on your computer, which help to identify the Web site next time it is visited. The temporary Internet files are stored in the browser cache and over a period of time occupy a large amount of space on your hard disk. For smooth browsing, it is important to periodically delete the cookies and clear the browser cache.

To clear cache, cookies, and history in Firefox® for Mac®, do the following:
1. Launch the Firefox browser.
2. Click the Firefox menu, and then click Preferences.
3. Click the Privacy tab.
4. In the Private Data section, click Clear Now.
5. Click the red dot on the upper left to close the Preferences window.
6. Click the red dot on the upper left to close the browser.

To clear cache, cookies, and history in Safari®, do the following:
1. Launch the Safari browser.
2. Click the Safari menu, and then click Empty Cache.
3. Click Empty to confirm.
4. Click the Safari menu, and then click Preferences.
5. In the Security window, click the Bookmarks tab.
6. Click Show Cookies.
7. Click Remove All to delete all cookies, and then click Done.
8. Click the History menu, scroll down to the end of the list, and then click Clear History.
9. Click the red dot on the upper left to close all the open windows.

Run spyware removal tools

Spyware or adware are like viruses that are downloaded to your computer through any software that you download, e-mail messages that you open, or even Web sites that you visit. They are usually downloaded onto your computer without your knowledge. Annoying pop-up ads, mysterious new toolbars, PC slow-downs, and new icons in your system tray are all signs that your computer is infected with these malicious programs. Although these programs are not as dangerous as viruses, they slow down your computer and try to gather personal information.

Adware is any software that, once installed on your computer, tracks your Web browsing habits and sends you pop-ups containing advertisements related to your browsing habits. While these may seem innocent, they consume the much-needed processor speed and Internet connection speed.

Spyware is similar to adware but much more dangerous. It scans your hard drive for personal information and your Web browsing habits. Once it discovers your e-mail address, it mails spam and junk e-mail that clutter your inbox.
