When will the AOL Pictures for Mac service be shut down?

The AOL Pictures for Mac service was shut down on December 31, 2008. An AOL official e-mail will be sent on October 27, 2008.

What happened to my photos?

Your photos will not be accessible via AOL Pictures for Mac as AOL Pictures for Mac was shut down on December 31, 2008. However, all images and albums can be retrieved through our online photo service partner, PhotoWorks. Ensure that you register for a PhotoWorks account before June 30, 2009. PhotoWorks will delete all the pictures of users that have not registered with them before June 30, 2009.

How do I retrieve my photos from AOL Pictures for Mac?

You can register with PhotoWorks to access your photos from AOL Pictures for Mac.

You can select more than one option based on what is right for you. For example, you could choose to register with PhotoWorks and also select albums to archive on DVD. Similarly, and you could transfer your albums to PhotoWorks. You could also choose all options for all your albums and images.

Why does AOL recommend accessing images through PhotoWorks?

AOL has selected PhotoWorks as our partner because it provides a wide range of features that are very similar to those found in AOL Pictures for Mac. This includes unlimited free storage for your photos, multiple sharing features and a wide variety of options for creating and printing. With PhotoWorks, you can share your pictures and albums via e-mail, and publish them on your own home pages. It also allows you to create lasting memories with photo books, calendars, cards, and many other photo gifts. How do I access my photos through PhotoWorks?

To access your photos through PhotoWorks:

  1. Go to pictures.aol.com.
  2. Log into your AOL Pictures account.

  3. Select Transfer Images to PhotoWorks, and then click GO to agree to the PhotoWorks Terms and Conditions and the PhotoWorks Privacy Policy.

Note: If you do not want to retain certain albums that have been transferred, you may delete them by using PhotoWorks service.

Can I use the PhotoWorks service to access photos that others have shared with me?

Yes. If you use PhotoWorks, all your images will be transferred to Photoworks, including those that others have shared with you.

Will my personal information be shared with PhotoWorks?

In order to facilitate the transfer of your images to PhotoWorks, limited personal information and data, including registration-related information, your photos and metadata associated with your photos (such as photo size, date and sharing references), will be shared with PhotoWorks. PhotoWorks will retain this data on behalf of AOL until June 30, 2009 in a manner consistent with the AOL Privacy Policy. We prohibit them from using the information for any purpose other than to carry out the services they are performing on behalf of AOL. AOL will not provide any billing or financial information to PhotoWorks. Once you register for a PhotoWorks account, you will be subject to the terms of the PhotoWorks Privacy Policy.

What if I do not want to use PhotoWorks?

Your images are available only through PhotoWorks. You must register with PhotoWorks within June 30, 2009.

What will happen to my Public Gallery photos?

If you select the PhotoWorks option, all images in your Public Gallery will be transferred as private photos to PhotoWorks. You can create your own Web page within PhotoWorks where others can view your favorite albums and Photo Book projects. You can decide which albums and/or Photo Books will be available on your My Share page, and determine whether each album can be saved to other member accounts.

What will happen to the images I have embedded on social networks or other sites?

The original images will not be affected. However, the link from the other site to the image were disabled on December 31, 2008. Anyone attempting to view these images from those sites will receive an error message or see a broken link icon.

Why can't I upload/share/edit photos now?

We have turned off the upload, sharing, and editing capabilities. If you would like to continue to upload, share or edit new pictures to an online photo service, we suggest registering with our photo partner, PhotoWorks, by going to pictures.aol.com.
