Manually backup and transfer your Personal Filing Cabinet on AOL Desktop v10.1

You can manually back up your Personal FIling Cabinet and use your filing cabinet on a different computer, which uses the same operating system. For example, if you have backed up your filing cabinet on AOL Desktop v10.1 using Windows Vista, you can use your filing cabinet on any other computer which uses AOL Desktop v10.1 and Windows Vista.

Note: You may not be able to see certain folders, as they might be hidden. Ensure you unhide the folders before you perform these steps.

Manually back up and transfer your Personal Filing Cabinet using Windows Vista

1. Click the Start button, then click Computer.
2. Double-click the Local Disk (C:) drive.
3. Double-click the Users folder.
4. In the Users window, double-click the folder, which has your windows user name.
5. Double-click the AppData folder.
6. Double-click the Local folder.
7. Double-click the AOL folder.
8. Double-click the UserProfiles folder.
9. Double-click the folder, which has numbers.
10. Double-click the folder, which has your screen name, followed by .mail.
11. Right-click the cls folder, and then click Copy.

Note: If you want to transfer the Personal Filing Cabinet to a different computer, you will have to paste this folder on to your storage device, like a floppy disc, CD ROM, or a pen drive.

12. Close all open windows, right-click on the desktop, and then click Paste.
13. On the computer, where you want to paste your Filing Cabinet, copy the folder from the storage device. Click the Start button, then click Computer.
14. Double-click the Local Disk (C:) drive.
15. Double-click the Users folder.
16. In the Users window, double-click the folder, which has your windows user name.
17. Double-click the AppData folder.
18. Double-click the Local folder.
19. Double-click the AOL folder.
20. Double-click the UserProfiles folder.
21. Double-click the folder, which has numbers.
22. Right-click the folder, which has your screen name followed by .mail, and then click Paste.
23. If prompted click the Yes to All button.

 


 

Manually back up and transfer your Personal Filing Cabinet using Windows XP

1. Click the Start button, then click My Computer.
2. Double-click the Local Disk (C:) drive.
3. Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
4. In the Documents and Settings window, double-click the folder, which has your computer's user name.
5. Double-click the Local Settings folder.
6. Double-click the Application Data folder.
7. Double-click the AOL folder.
8. Double-click the UserProfiles folder.
9. Double-click the folder with numbers.
10. Double-click the folder, which has your screen name followed by .mail.
11. Right-click the cls folder, and then click Copy.
12. Close all open windows, right-click on the desktop, and then click Paste.

Note: You can paste this folder on to your storage device, like a floppy disc, CD ROM, or a pen drive.

13. Go to the computer, where you want to transfer the Personal Filing Cabinet. Click the Start button, then click My Computer.
14. Double-click the Local Disk (C:) drive.
15. Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
16. In the Documents and Settings window, double-click the folder, which has your computer's user name.
17. Double-click the Local Settings folder.
18. Double-click the Application Data folder.
19. Double-click the AOL folder.
20. Double-click the UserProfiles folder.
21. Double-click the folder with numbers.
22. Right-click the folder, which has your screen name followed by .mail, and then click Paste.

Note: If prompted click the Yes to All button.
