Scan your computer using McAfee Internet Security Suite - Special edition from AOL

For instructions on how to scan your computer using McAfee, click on the version of McAfee you currently have installed on your computer. If you've installed McAfee after October 14, 2013 you are using version 12.8.

When you install Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware, you have excellent virus protection out-of-the-box. You activities are protected from viruses in real time, which means that any time a file is downloaded, accessed or in use, McAfee checks it for you.

Leave real-time scanning on to ensure that your PC stays protected from the latest security threats.

In addition to real-time scanning, you can run these scans:

  • Scheduled scan -- Scan your PC on a regular basis
  • Quick scan -- Scan your PC’s processes, critical Windows files, and other susceptible areas
  • Full scan -- Scan all drives and folders on your PC. (NOTE: Full scan doesn’t check network drives.)
  • Custom scan -- Scan your entire PC, or only specific areas like your critical system files, network drives, desktop, and program files.
  • Manual scan -- Scan a specific file, folder, or set of files and folders directly from Windows.

The instructions given below are for McAfee Internet Security Suite - Special edition from AOL version 12.8.

To run a Scheduled scan:

1. Open McAfee and click the Schedule and run scans.

2. Click Scheduled Scans.

3. Click Schedule Your Scans.

4. Click the Select a schedule option and drop-down menu, select the desired schedule for the scan and click Apply. If you want to customize the schedule, skip to the next step.

5. Click the Create my own scan schedule option.

6. Click the Create my own scan schedule drop-down menu, and select the desired week.

7. Click the days of the week and the preferred time you want to schedule the scan.

8. Click Apply.

To run a Quick scan:

1. On the Home Page, click Virus and Spyware Protection.

2. Click Scan Your PC.

3. Click Run a quick scan.

When the scan is complete, you'll see the message: Quick Scan is done displaying the details of the scan.

NOTE: If you see the message No Issues Detected, then the computer is virus free. Just click Done.

To run a Full scan:

1. On the Home Page, click Virus and Spyware Protection.

2. Click Scan Your PC.

3. Click Run a full scan.

When the scan is complete, you'll see the message: Full Scan is done displaying the details of the scan.

NOTE: If you see the message No Issues Detected, then the computer is virus free. Just click Done.

To run a Custom scan:

1. On the Home Page, click Virus and Spyware Protection.

2. Click Scan Your PC.

3. Click Run a custom scan.

4. Customize your scan options by clicking Customize Your Scan and/or Excluded Files and Folders and selecting the options you prefer. Then click Scan.

When the scan is complete, you'll see the message: Custom Scan is done displaying the details of the scan.

NOTE: If you see the message No Issues Detected, then the computer is virus free. Just click Done.

To run a Manual scan:

Anywhere in Windows, right click the item you want to check, then click Scan/Scan for threats.

NOTE: To select more than one item, hold the CTRL key while selecting.
