Use Video IM in the AIM software

AIM® Video Instant Messaging allows you to have video conversations with your online friends. To use the video feature with a friend who is online, both of you will need to have:

  • A webcam
  • A microphone and speakers, combo headset with microphone, or a USB phone.

How to

Start a video session

To start a video session with an online friend:
1. Start an Instant Message (IM) conversation with an online friend who is using the latest AIM® software or the AOL® 9.0 Optimized or higher.

Note: To start a new IM session, double-click the buddy name on your Buddy List®, or hold the Alt key on your keyboard and tap the I key.

2. Click the Video button to initiate the session. Once the recipient accepts the invitation, you can begin chatting.

Receive an invitation to join a video session

When you receive an invitation, you have four choices on how to respond to the invitation. You can:

  • Click the Accept button to start a Video session.
  • Click the Reject button to decline the invitation.
  • Click the Block button to add the sender to your list of blocked screen names.
  • Click the Ignore button to ignore all further IM invitations from this sender during this AIM® session. The sender will not be blocked the next time you sign on.

After both of you have agreed to proceed and a direct connection is established, the video window opens, which allows you to have a video chat.

Adjust the video settings during a video session

Once a video session is established, you have 3 options on the Actions menu that you can take advantage of:

  • Show My Camera View: This will allow you to see the image that your camera is sending along with the images you are receiving from your buddy. When you select this option, a check mark will appear next to it.
  • Display Video Fullscreen: The incoming video will occupy the entire screen.
  • End Session: During a video session, you can end the session at any time by clicking the End Session button, or by clicking Actions and then clicking End Session from the menu.
