How do I resolve these problems with my AIM Video Connection?

If you're having problems with AIM Video Chat, there are several things you can do to improve your video quality and connection.

Ensure your computer meets the minimum system requirements

Please make sure your computer has the following system specifications (or better) before using AIM Video Chat:

  • Webcam, sound card, headset or speakers and microphone
  • Pentium III equivalent processor or higher
  • Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, XP or 2000 (Windows XP or higher for Video Chat)
  • DirectX 9 or higher
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 20 MB of free hard disk space
  • Broadband internet connection
  • 800x600 screen resolution or higher
  • Internet Explorer 6 or higher
  • Adobe Flash Player 9 or higher

Set up and test your webcam

Please make sure your webcam is plugged in and working properly with your computer before using AIM Video Chat. Consult your webcam's manufacturer website or help documentation if needed.

Follow the instructions below if you need to add your webcam as a device to your computer:

For Windows XP:

1. Click Start and select Control Panel.

2. Click Printers and Other Hardware. (Skip this step if the control panel is set to classic view.)

3. Select Scanners and Cameras.

4. Ensure that your device is listed. If it is not, click Add an imaging device on the left and follow the installation wizard  to complete the set up.

For Windows Vista/7:

1. Click Start and select Control Panel.

2. Click the Hardware and Sound icon.

3. Click the Scanners and Cameras icon.

4. Click Continue if prompted for permission.

5. Ensure that your device is listed. If it is not, click Add Device and follow the installation wizard to complete the set up.

For Windows 2000:

1. Click Start and select Settings.

2. Click Control Panel.

3. Double-click Scanners and Cameras.

4. Ensure that your device is listed. If it is not, click Add and follow the installation wizard to complete the set up.
