How do I reconfigure an AOL Mail account in Thunderbird for Mac?

If you have issues with your AOL Mail account that you created on Thunderbird for Mac, you can reconfigure the account at any time to resolve the issue.

To reconfigure your AOL Mail account:

1. Open Mozilla Thunderbird.

2. Under Smart Folders, click the AOL account that you want to reconfigure, and then click View settings for this account.

3. In the window that opens, click Account Actions, and then select the Remove Account option.You will receive a confirmation window.

4. Click OK to remove the account.

5. In the Local Folders window that opens, click Account Actions, and then click the Add Mail Account option.

6. In the Mail Account Setup window, enter the following details:

  • Your first and last name as you want it to appear to others in the Your name box
  • Your AOL email address in the Email address box
  • Your AOL password in the Password box
  • Click Continue. The Mail Account Setup window extends to show additional settings.

7. Keep the default IMAP server settings.

Note: AOL Mail supports both POP3 and IMAP, but we recommend you use IMAP. To learn more about the differences between POP3 and IMAP, please visit our help article What is the difference between POP3 and IMAP?

8. If you wish to keep the default settings (IMAP server settings), click Create Account.

Note: If you want to configure the POP server settings, perform the following steps:

  • Click Edit, and then choose POP from the drop down menu next to the Incoming box.

  • Click Re-test configuration.

  • Click Create Account.

8. Your AOL email folder is displayed under Local Folders.

You have now successfully reconfigured your AOL Mail account on Thunderbird for Mac. Sweet!
