How do I access AOL Mail using Microsoft Outlook 2000?

You can read and send your AOL Mail using the Microsoft Outlook 2000 software.

To set up your AOL Mail account in the Outlook software:

1. Launch the Microsoft Outlook software.

Note: If you receive a message asking you whether you would like to register Outlook 2000 as the default manager for Mail, News, and Contacts, click Yes to continue.

2. Click Tools, and then click Accounts.

3. Click Add, and then click Mail.

4. In the Display name box, type your name as you would like it to appear in your outgoing email, and then click Next.

5. In the E-mail address box, enter your full email address for example: Michealmarvel@aol.com or GabyGrace@aim.com, and then click Next.

6. Click the My incoming mail server is a drop-down menu, and then choose IMAP or POP3.

Note: AOL Mail supports both POP3 and IMAP. The difference between POP3 and IMAP is that POP3 downloads messages and stores them on your computer's hard drive, while IMAP stores them on AOL servers. 7. In the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server box, type

  • imap.aol.com for IMAP
  • pop.aol.com for POP3

8. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box, type smtp.aol.com, and then click Next.

9. In the Account name box, type your AOL or AIM email address.

10. In the Password box, type your AOL or AIM password, and then click Next.

Note: If you want Outlook 2000 to save your AOL or AIM password, select the check box next to Remember password.

11. Select the Connect using my local area netword (LAN) option, and then click Next.

12. Click Finish.

Note: At this time, Outlook will build the Outlook Toolbar, and then open up your Inbox.

13. Click Tools, and then click Accounts.

14. Click the Mail tab and select the account that you have created and click Properties.

15. Click the Servers tab, select the check box next to My server requires authentication, and then click Settings.

16. Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server option, and then click OK

17. Click the Advanced tab.

18. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) box, type 587, and then click OK

19. Click Close.

You have now successfully set up your AOL or AIM email account for Microsoft Outlook 2000.
