AOL Toolbar Problems

AOL Toolbar is installed but not visible.

Sometimes, when you install other components on your browser, the AOL Toolbar software gets disabled. To find the AOL Toolbar, click the View menu, select Toolbars, and then check AOL Toolbar by clicking on it. When the AOL Toolbar is enabled, a check mark will appear next to it. 

The email count in my toolbar blank, but I have messages. Why?

The updated email count is visible on the AOL Toolbar only when you are signed in to your AOL account. To see how many unread messages are there in your inbox, please sign in to your AOL account at mail.aol.com.

Unable to launch Firefox after installing AOL Toolbar

Sometimes, you may be unable to launch Firefox after installing AOL Toolbar. Please uninstall AOL Toolbar, and then try launching Firefox again.

You will need to know the version of the Microsoft Windows operating system installed on your computer. If you do not know how to find this information, follow the instructions in the online help article How do I determine the version of Windows I have.

Installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 and AOL Toolbar pop-up blocker disappeared

The Microsoft Pop-up Blocker installed with Windows XP SP2 takes precedence over the AOL Toolbar Pop-up Blocker. If you want to use the AOL Toolbar Pop-up Blocker, you will need to turn off the Microsoft Internet Explorer Pop-up Blocker.

Turn Off the Microsoft Internet Explorer Pop-up Blocker

You can turn off the Microsoft Pop-up Blocker in either of two ways.

To turn off the Microsoft Pop-up Blocker from the Internet Explorer window:
In the upper right of the Internet Explorer window, click the Tools drop-down menu, select Pop-up Blocker, then click Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.

To turn off the Microsoft Pop-up Blocker from the Internet Options window:

  1. On the Internet Explorer toolbar, click the Tools menu, then click Internet Options.

  2. Click the Privacy tab.

  3. In the Pop-up Blocker section, click the Block pop-ups box, or Turn on Pop-up Blocker box, to clear it.

  4. Click the OK button.

One of the AOL Toolbar files is corrupted or invalid

The "One of the AOL Toolbar files is corrupted or invalid" message is displayed if a local file is invalid or missing. To resolve this error message,uninstall, and then reinstall the AOL Toolbar software.

AOL Toolbar Error Messages

Message: Cannot find file:///C:/Program%20Files/AOL%20Toolbar/welcome.html

Sometimes, you may receive the error message "Cannot find ˜file:///C:/Program%20Files/AOL%20Toolbar/welcome.html" when you try to open Internet Explorer while you are connected to the AOL service. This may happen if the previous version of AOL Toolbar (version 1.0) is present on your computer.

Please follow the solution given below to resolve this issue:

  1. Right-click here, and then select Save or Save Link As. Save the file to your Desktop if possible.
  2. Locate the file on your Desktop (or in your Downloads folder) and double-click to run it.
  3. If prompted by a security window, click Yes or Continue.
  4. On the Registry Editor window, click Yes.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Close all open windows and re-open Internet Explorer. The error message should no longer appear.

Message: Unable to Update the AOL Toolbar

With the AOL Toolbar, you may receive the message, "Unable to update the AOL Toolbar," for one of two reasons. After trying the first solution, check to see if you can update the AOL Toolbar software. If you are still unable to update the AOL Toolbar software, continue to the next solution to resolve the issue.

Check the Connection with Your ISP

When the AOL Toolbar updates, it must use your existing Internet connection to receive the files needed to perform the update.

To check the connection with your ISP:

Enter the address for a Web page and verify whether you are able to access that Web page normally.

Try Again Later

The AOL service is sometimes very busy and may experience temporary difficulties that can lead to delays or slow responses. It is also possible that some adjustments are being made to the area. AOL appreciates your patience during times when popular features may temporarily be unavailable.

To try again later, wait a few minutes, then try updating the AOL Toolbar again.

Message: You must have administer rights---to make these changes

You will receive the message "You must have administrator rights for this computer in order to make these changes," if you attempt to upgrade the AOL Toolbar software using a non-administrative account with Microsoft Windows XP or Windows Vista™. To resolve this error message, log in using the Administrator user name and password, then attempt to upgrade the AOL Toolbar software again.

Note: If you do not know the password for the Administrator account, contact either the computer administrator or the computer manufacturer for further assistance.

Log in as Windows Administrator, Then Upgrade

You must have administrator access on the computer to upgrade the AOL Toolbar software.

To log in as Windows Vista™ administrator, then upgrade:

  1. Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock the computer (requires password to unlock), then click Log Off.
  2. Click the Administrator icon.
  3. In the Password box, type the Windows administrator password, then tap the Enter key on your keyboard.
  4. Launch Internet Explorer.
  5. On the right side of AOL Toolbar, click the Toolbar Options icon, select Help, then click Update Toolbar....
  6. Click the Yes button.
  7. If a new update is available, follow the onscreen prompts to download and install it.

To log in as Windows XP administrator, then upgrade:

  1. Click the Start button, clickLog Off, then click the Log Off button.
  2. Click the Administrator icon.
  3. In the Type your password box, type the Windows administrator password, then tap the Enter key on your keyboard.
  4. Launch Internet Explorer.
  5. On the AOL Toolbar, to the left of the search box with the magnifying glass, click the small black down arrow, select Help, then click Update Toolbar
  6. Click the Yes button.
  7. If a new update is available, follow the onscreen prompts to download and install it.

Message: One of the AOL Toolbar files is corrupted or invalid. Press to uninstall

You may get the message "One of the AOL Toolbar files is corrupted or invalid. Press to uninstall," if a local file is damaged or missing. To resolve this message, reinstall the AOL Toolbar software.

Message: Can't find the current version information with AOL Toolbar

With the AOL Toolbar, you may receive the message, "Can't find current version information," for one of two reasons. After trying the first solution, check to see if you can update the AOL Toolbar software. If you are still unable to update the AOL Toolbar software, continue to the next solution to resolve the issue.

The message "Cannot find current version information" is displayed if a file is invalid or missing. To resolve this error message, reinstall the AOL Toolbar software.

Message: Can't establish a connection. Please check your internet connection and try again.

Check the Internet Connection and Try Again

This message appears when the AOL Toolbar cannot connect to a remote Web server. The most likely cause of a connection failure is an interruption to your Internet connection. Please check your Internet connection and try again.
