Security & Privacy

Your computer stores a lot of information about its usage. This data includes files, cookies, browsing history, saved form data, etc. While storing such information can be helpful, it can also lead to privacy breaches if the proper measures are not taken.

To help protect your privacy, AOL Computer Checkup's Security & Privacy category offers four tools:

Select a tool for more information.

File Shredder

File Shredder is a powerful tool that permanently deletes files and folders from your computer, preventing their recovery. It also provides a choice of security levels—from quick deletions to Department of Defense approved military grade shredding technologies for maximum protection. File Shredder allows you to shred:

  • Files or Folders
  • Recycle Bin
  • Drives

Warning: Please note that you cannot recover any data you delete with File Shredder.

How to Shred Files or Folders

To Shred Files or Folders:

  1. Start the File Shredder tool from the Security & Privacy category from the left pane.
  2. Select Files or Folders to shred existing files and folders from your computer and click Next.
  3. Click Add Files (click Add Folder if you want to shred a folder).
  4. Select the file/folder you want to shred and click Open. (To select multiple files/folders, hold the CTRL key and then click each item you want to select.)
  5. To shred the selected files/folders, click Shred. Then, click the OK button to confirm. Once the shredding is complete, a summary screen will appear with the total number of files selected, shredded, remaining, and the amount of disk space recovered.
  6. Click Done to close the module. You can then select another tool.

How to Shred Files or Folders in the Recycle Bin

To Shred Files or Folders in the Recycle Bin:

  1. Start AOL Computer Checkup then click the Security & Privacy category from the left pane and select File Shredder.
  2. To shred items that are in the Recycle Bin (i.e., previously deleted files), select Recycle Bin and then click Next.
  3. AOL Computer Checkup will then analyze the Recycle Bin to detect the number of files and folders present in it, along with their size.
  4. To shred, click Shred and then OK to confirm. Once the shredding is complete, a summary screen will appear with the total number of items in the Recycle Bin, items shredded, items remaining, and the amount of data wiped out.
  5. Click Done to close the module. You can then select another tool.

How to Shred an Entire Drive or Just Free Space on it

To Shred an Entire Drive or Just Free Space on it:

  1. Start AOL Computer Checkup then click the Security & Privacy category from the left pane and select File Shredder.
  2. To wipe out an entire hard disk partition with all of its content, or to shred only the free space on a selected hard disk partition, select the target Drive and click Next.
  3. Select the hard drive partition from the drop-down list, and choose a desired shredding option. There are two options to choose from for shredding drives:
    • Wipe Free Space Only: Wipes out only the free space available on a drive. The free space on a drive is the area on the hard disk freed after deleting data. In order to make sure the deleted files cannot be recovered, the selected drive’s free space will be overwritten several times.
    • Wipe Entire Drive: Wipes out an entire hard disk partition (existing as well as previously deleted data). Please note that you cannot choose this option to shred a root/system partition.
  4. Click Shred and then OK to confirm. Upon your consent, File Shredder will start shredding the selected hard disk partition. To stop shredding, click Cancel. Once the shredding is complete, a summary screen will appear with the amount of free space wiped and the total time taken.
  5. Click Done to close the module. You can then select another tool.

Advanced Settings

Click Advanced Settings to change the shredding method used by File Shredder and add/remove folders to the File Shredder’s Ignore List.

  • Fast Secure Delete: The default shredding method used by File Shredder. It employs the fastest shredding algorithm and makes sure the shredded content cannot be recovered by commercial recovery software.
  • Random Fill Data-Streams: A 3-pass shred algorithm that degausses and protects against physically intrusive recovery mechanisms.
  • Secure Delete American DoD 5220.20 –M: A complex, 7-pass Department of Defense recommended algorithm to destroy data and degauss magnetic drives.
  • Secure Delete Gutmann Method (35 Pass): The most complex, 35-pass shred algorithm to shred data using the Peter Gutmann method. This method is extremely secure, but requires more time.
  • Ignore List: A preset list of folders ignored by File Shredder. The contents of these folders are not shredded. You can add new folders to the list by clicking Add. To remove a preselected folder, select the folder and click Remove. To restore the default set of folders in the Ignore List, click Restore Default.
