Cannot receive email or attachments on AOL software for Mac

You may not be able to receive email or attachments on AOL software for Mac OS X for several reasons. Given below are some solutions to resolve the issue. After trying the first solution, check whether you can receive the attachments. If the issue persists, try the next solution until the problem is fixed.

Trash software preferences

Note: If trashing preferences using a Mac with Lion (10.7 or higher), please refer to instructions in help article Making the Library folder visible when trashing software preferences or uninstalling AOL Desktop for Mac.

To trash the software preferences:

1. Click the Go menu, and then click Home.

2. Double-click the Library folder.

3. Double-click the Preferences folder.

4. On the toolbar, click the View menu, and then click as List.

5. Drag the America Online folder to Trash.

6. Drag the com.aol.aol.plist file to Trash.

7. Drag the com.apple.internetconfig.plist file to Trash.

8. Drag the com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist file to Trash.

9. Click the red dot on the upper left to close the window. Similarly, close all the windows that were opened during the above steps.

Move the personal filing cabinet to the desktop

To drag the personal filing cabinet to the desktop

1. Double-click the MAC HD icon.

2. Double-click the Users folder.

3. Double-click the Shared folder.

4. Double-click the America Online folder.

5. Drag all the personal filing cabinet files to the desktop.

Note: If a screen name is Iminggracy, the PFC will be named as "Iminggracy's Filing Cabinet."

6. Click the red dot on the upper left to close the window.

Reset the locations and re-detect the modem

There are several reasons why choosing new access numbers may correct this issue. There may be issues with the local phone system or AOL might have reorganized the local access numbers or the location file may contain damaged information -- any of these may prevent you from connecting to the AOL service.

To reset the locations and re-detect the modem

1. On the desktop, double-click Mac HD icon.

2. Double-click the Users folder.

3. Double-click the Shared folder.

4. Double-click the America Online folder.

5. Double-click the Data folder.

6. Click all files with a globe icon, such as Home, and drag them to Trash.

7. Click the X in the upper left corner to close all open windows.

8. Start the AOL software as you would normally, and then click Sign On.

9. Click OK.

10. Click OK again.

11. Type your Area Code, and then click Next.

12. Choose an access phone number for your area by clicking it, and then click Add.

13. If needed, type 1 before the AOL access number within the Your modem will dial this access number exactly as shown window. Choose any other dialing option by selecting the appropriate check box in the Location Dialing Options section, and then click OK. Repeat this step for each access number that you want to use.

14. Click Done.

Note: What constitutes a local call can vary widely by calling plan and phone company. For your protection, please check with your local phone company to ensure the AOL access phone number you selected is a local call for your calling plan

Back up the personal files, then delete and reinstall the AOL software

To back up the personal files, then delete and reinstall the AOL software

1. Double-click the MAC HD icon.

2. Double-click the Users folder.

3. Double-click the Shared folder.

4. Double-click the America Online folder.

Note: If the America Online folder is not displayed, go back to the hard drive and look for a previous System folder. Open the previous System folder and then follow steps 2 through 7. Sometimes, more then one previous System folder may be found. In such cases, several System folders will need to be checked before finding the America Online folder.

5. Drag the Art Database file to Trash.

6. Drag the Personal Filing Cabinet of the screen name in question to the Desktop.

Note: If your screen name is Iminggracy, the PFC will be named "Iminggracy's Filing Cabinet".

7. Click the red dot on the upper left to close the window.

Open the file using another program that supports this file type

There are other programs you can use to open the type of file you wish to open. For example, a file with a .jpg or .gif extension is an image file and will open in most graphics applications as well as in Microsoft Internet Explorer. Try using another program that supports the file you wish to access. Once you've opened the program, click the File menu, click Open, then click the file with which you seem to be experiencing trouble.

Note: You can find out more about file types, extensions, and the programs used to work with them online. One method would be to search online for the extension of the file you are having difficulty with. A few examples of sites which catalog many file types and extensions are:

You can also contact the sender of the file in question and ask for instructions on how to access it.

Note: If the above solutions do not resolve the issue, inform the original sender of the email to resend the mail with the file as attachment.
