How do I go back to the previous version of the AOL Desktop Software?

Installing a newer version of the AOL Desktop Software does not delete the existing or older versions of AOL Desktop from your computer. Unless you uninstall the previous versions, they would still exist on your computer.

Note: Uninstalling the AOL Desktop Software will not cancel your account.

Information you need

You will need to know the version of the Microsoft Windows operating system installed on your computer. You can find this information by following the instructions given in the help article How do I determine the version of Windows I have?.

To go back to the previous version of the AOL software:

Note: Ensure that your computer meets the system requirements for the version of the AOL Desktop Software that you want to use. If your computer doesn't meet the system requirements, you may experience problems with either the software or the computer. Please refer to our help article System requirements for the AOL Desktop Software to check whether your computer meets the system requirements for the AOL Desktop Software you want to use.

1. Open AOL System Information.

  • If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, click Start. In the Search box, type "system" and click AOL System Information. If prompted by the User Account Control window, click Yes or Continue. The AOL System Information 2.0 window will appear. Continue to Step 2.

IMPORTANT: If no window appears, check the Windows taskbar for a flashing tab. If you see a flashing tab, click it. The User Account Control window will appear. Click Yes to open the AOL System Information window and continue to Step 2.

Note: If you are unable to open AOL System Information, you can manually navigate to the folder that contains the pervious version/installation of the AOL Desktop Software.

  • If you are using Windows XP, 2000, Me or 98, click Start and select Run. In the Run window, type "sinf" and click OK. The AOL System Information window will appear. If prompted, click OK.

2. Click the AOL Software or AOL tab, and then click Open App. Folder.

3. The window that appears, by default, opens the folder of the AOL Desktop Software that was most recently launched on your computer. Double-click the AOL #.# folder (# refers to the version of the AOL Desktop Software that is installed on your computer: e.g., AOL 9.6) that is displayed right above the folder that is selected by default.

4. Right-click the aol or aol.exe file, select Send to, and then click Desktop (create shortcut).

5. Close all open windows. You'll now find the aol - Shortcut or shortcut to aol.exe icon on your desktop. Click this icon to access the previous version of the AOL Desktop Software.

Note: If you wish to use the previous version of the AOL Desktop Software and uninstall the current one, first verify whether the previous version still works, and then uninstall the AOL Desktop Software.

To go back to the previous version of the AOL Desktop Software by manually navigating to the folder:

For instance, you may see folders such as AOL 9.6, AOL 9.6a, and AOL 9.6b, where AOL 9.6b is the folder with the latest download of AOL Desktop. Please make sure that you double-click the folder that represents the previous version/installation that you want to get back to.
