Manually restore PFC - Windows XP/Me/2000/98

The AOL Desktop Software automatically backs up the Personal Filing Cabinet (PFC) every four weeks. You can use this backup copy to restore your Personal Filing Cabinet. If a backup copy is not available but there is an older copy of the PFC on your computer, you can use the older copy to restore your PFC files.

IMPORTANT: When you restore your Personal Filing Cabinet, the backup copy of your Personal Filing Cabinet replaces your current Filing Cabinet. This deletes the emails stored in your current Filing Cabinet. Verify that you have access to your emails in the Old Mail folder before replacing the current Filing Cabinet files with the backup copy.

Note: You will need to know the version of the AOL Desktop Software installed on your computer and the version of AOL Connectivity Service (ACS) that your AOL Desktop Software (AOL 9.0 or higher) uses to connect to the internet. You can find this information by following the instructions given in help articles below:

To manually restore the PFC from a backup copy:

1. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type sinf, and click OK. If prompted by a caution window, click OK. The AOL System Information 2.0 or AOL System Information window will appear.

Note: If you are unable to open AOL System Information, check out our help article Open Data Folder to find out how to manually open the Data Folder. When finished, continue from Step 3.

2. Open Data folder.

  • If you are using ACS 4 or ACS 3: Click the AOL Software or AOL tab, and then click Open Data Folder.
  • If you are using ACS 2: Click the WAOL tab, and then click Data Folder.
  • If you are using ACS 1: Click Data Folder.
  • If you are using AOL 8.0 or lower: Click Folder.

3. Remember the folder that is highlighted. (e.g., in the image given below, the C_AOL 9.6b folder is highlighted).

4. Click the C_ AOL #.#x folder above the one that was highlighted. (with #.# being the version of AOL Desktop installed on your computer and x being a letter designating the install number). This folder is the previous copy or version of the AOL Desktop Software that was installed on your computer and should contain the previous copy of your PFC. For example, when you first install AOL 9.6, the folder C_AOL 9.6 is created. When you install AOL 9.6 again, C_AOL 9.6a is created. When you install AOL 9.6 a third time, the folder C_AOL 9.6b is created, and so on.

Note: You can also store this folder, which contains all your emails, to any other folder or external storage device. Simply copy and paste it to the desired location.

5. Double-click the organize folder.

6. Right-click the appropriate Username that has no extension after it, and then click Copy.

7. Click the folder that was highlighted earlier. (e.g., in the image given below, the C_AOL 9.6b folder is highlighted).

8. Double-click the organize folder.

9. Click the Edit menu, and then click Paste.

10. Click Yes to replace the Username file.

11. Close all open windows.

12. Sign in to AOL Desktop and check whether you can view your Address Book or PFC.
