How do I manage my emails using folders on AOL Mail?

You can use folders to organize the mail in your account. You can also rename, empty, and delete personal folders.

Important: The number of days an email stays in your mailbox depends on the type of mailbox you use and the folder in which you save the email. To learn more, please visit the online help article How long are my emails stored in my mailbox?

How to

Create mail folders

1. On the left side of AOL Mail, move your pointer over My Folders, then click the Plus sign.


2. In the box that appears, type a name for the folder.

3. Click the + button next to the box. You will see the message Your folder was created at the bottom of the window.

Note: The name of your folder can be any combination of letters and numbers. The name cannot begin with a space, %, or #, and it cannot contain characters such as \, :, *, ?, "", <, >, |, and %.

Rename mail folders

1. On the left side of AOL Mail, click My Folders.

2. Move your pointer over the folder you want to rename and click the Settings link (gear icon) next to it.

3. In the Edit Folder window, type a new name for the folder in the box, then click Save.

You will see the renamed folder under My Folders.

Note: The following reserved characters are not allowed in folder names: \, :, *, ?, "", <, >, |, and %. You can rename a personal folder, but you cannot rename any of the five system folders.

Empty the contents of a folder

1. On the left side of AOL Mail, click My Folders.

2. Move your pointer over the folder you want to empty, and then click the Settings link (gear icon).

Note: You can also right-click the folder, then click Empty.

3. In the Edit Folder window, click Empty.

 

4. Click OK.

You will see the message The folder 'Example' was emptied at the bottom of the window.

Delete mail folders

You can delete personal folders, but you cannot delete any of the system folders. The Saved Mail folder cannot be renamed or deleted.

When you delete a folder, the contents are immediately deleted. 

1. On the left side of AOL Mail, click My Folders.

2. Move your pointer over the folder you want to delete, then click the Settings link (gear icon).

Note: You can also right-click the folder, click Delete, and then click OK.

3. In the Edit Folder window, click the Delete link.

4. Click OK. You will see the message The folder 'Example' was deleted at the bottom of the window.

Note: If you delete an empty folder, you will see the message The folder 'Example' was deleted. Undo ? at the bottom of the window. You can undo the folder deletion by clicking the Undo ? link next to message. You will then get the message Folder 'Example' has been restored.
