How do I reconfigure an AOL Mail account in Microsoft Outlook Express 6?

If you're facing issues with the AOL Mail account that you created in Outlook Express 6, you can delete the account and reconfigure it.

To reconfigure your AOL Mail in Outlook Express 6:

1. Launch the Outlook Express software.

Note: If prompted to specify whether you want to use Outlook Express as the default email program, click Yes.

2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Accounts.

3. Select the email account you are having issues with, and then click Remove.

4. Click Yes.

5. Click Add, and then click Mail.

6. In the Display name box, type your name as you would like it to appear on your outgoing email messages, and then click Next.

7. In the E-mail address box, type your complete AOL email address, for example,, and then click Next.

8. Click the My incoming mail server is a drop-down menu, select IMAP or POP3 from the list.

Note: You can access your AOL Mail using any email program that supports both the POP3 and IMAP protocols. AOL Mail supports both POP3 and IMAP. To know more about the differences between POP3 and IMAP, go to our online help article What is the difference between POP3 and IMAP?

9. In the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server box, type:

  • if you use IMAP
  • if you use POP3

10. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box, type, and then click Next.

11. In the Account name box, type your AOL Username.

12. In the Password box, type your AOL password.

Note: If you want Outlook Express to save your AOL password, select the check box next to Remember password.

13. Click Next.

14. Click Finish.

If you are using IMAP, skip to Step 19. If you are using POP3, follow the instructions below.

15. Select the account name you have created, and then click Properties.

16. Click the Advanced tab.

17. In the Delivery section, select the check box next to Leave a copy of each message on the server and, then click OK.

18. Click Close.

19. Click the Tools menu, and then click Options.

20. In the Options window, click the Send tab.

21. Ensure that the check box next to Save copy of sent messages in the 'Sent Items' folder is selected and click OK.

Note: If you are prompted to download folders from the mail server, click Yes.

You have now successfully reconfigured your AOL Mail account on Outlook Express 6.
