Welcome screen graphics do not rotate or refresh

Graphics on the Welcome screen may not rotate or refresh for one of several reasons. After trying the first solution, check to see if the Welcome screen graphics rotate or refresh normally. If the Welcome screen graphics do not rotate or refresh correctly, continue using the suggested solutions until the problem is fixed.

You may wish to print or save a copy of these instructions as this page may not remain visible as you go through the suggested steps.

Information you need

You will need to know the version of the Microsoft® Windows® operating system installed on your computer. If you do not know how to find this information, follow the instructions in the online help article titled How do I determine the version of Windows I have.

You will also need to know the version of the AOL® software you are using. If you do not know how to find this information, follow the instructions in the online help article titled How to determine which version of the AOL software I have.

Rebuild the AOL Adapter

The AOL Adapter connects the AOL software to Internet Explorer®. If the adapter gets damaged, it can affect the AOL® service. Fortunately, the bad adapter can be removed, and a new one will be automatically built by the AOL software.

To remove and rebuild the AOL Adapter in AOL® 9.5, AOL® 9.1, or any version of the AOL® 9.0 software:

1. Click the File menu, and then click Exit to close the AOL software if it is open.

2. Open the AOL® System Information tool:

  • If using Windows® Vista®/XP, click Start, click All Programs, click AOL or America Online, and then click AOL System Information.

  • If using Windows® 98/Me/2000, click Start, click Programs, click AOL, and then click AOL System Information.

3. In the AOL System Information 2.0 window, click the Utilities tab.

4. Scroll down to the AOL Utilities section, and then next to Rebuild AOL Adapter, click Start.

5. If a Warning! message appears, click OK to continue.

6. Click Close.

7. Click X to close the AOL System Information 2.0 window.

Run Quick Restore

The Quick Restore feature allows you to reset the AOL software to the default state deleting all updates downloaded in the past. It can help resolve issues that you may be having with your AOL software without having to reinstall the software. Please ensure that the AOL software is closed before you perform the steps below. In order to provide you with the most recent version of the AOL software, you will receive a series of updates upon each sign off. Learn more about the AOL software updates.

You will need to know the version of the AOL® Connectivity Service installed on your computer. If you do not know how to find this information, follow the instructions in the online help article titled How to determine which version of AOL Connectivity Service I have.

To run a Quick Restore:

1. Click Start, select Programs or All Programs, select AOL, and then click AOL System Information.

2. Click the Utilities tab.

3. Next to AOL Process Shut Down, click Start.

4. Click OK to start the AOL Process Shut Down utility.

5. Tap any key on your keyboard. The AOL Process Shutdown utility will close AOL® System Information.

6. Right-click the Windows taskbar, and then click Task Manager.

7. Ensure that waol.exe, acsd.exe, aolacsd.exe, and aoldial.exe are not listed. If they are present in the list, click waol.exe to highlight it, and then click End Process. Repeat the same for acsd.exe, aolacsd.exe, and aoldial.exe.

8. Click Start, select Programs or All Programs, select AOL, and then click AOL System Information.

9. On the left side of the AOL System Information 2.0 window, click the AOL Software tab.

10. Click Quick Restore.

11. Click OK.

12. Once Quick Restore is complete, click Close.

13. Click X to close the AOL System Information 2.0 window.

Notes:

  • On the AOL® Sign On screen, if the Password box is not visible, click the Screen Name drop-down menu, and then select another screen name. The Password box will automatically appear.
  • After running Quick Restore, the AOL software may get selected as your default Web application. Some Web applications and Auto-AOL® sessions may also need to be reset. However, Favorite Places and e-mail saved in the Personal Filing Cabinet will not be lost.

Clear the Cache, Cookies, and History, and then reset Web Settings

Whenever you visit Web sites, temporary Internet files and cookies are stored on your computer to identify the Web sites you've visited. Sometimes, these temporary Internet files and cookies can cause the issue you are experiencing. Similarly, your History list can also be a concern. The more days you have specified for pages to be saved on your history list, the more disk space is used on your computer. You can free up the disk space by clearing this list.

To clear cache, cookies, and history, and then reset Web settings for Internet Explorer 7.0:

1. Close any Internet browser windows that may be open on your computer.

2. Click Start, select Programs or All Programs, and then click Internet Explorer.

3. In the upper right, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.

4. On the General tab, under the Browsing history section, click Delete.

5. Under the Temporary Internet Files section, click Delete files to clear the cache.

6. Click Yes to confirm.

7. Under the Cookies section, click Delete cookies to clear cookies.

8. Click Yes to confirm.

9. Under the History section, click Delete history to clear history.

10. Click Yes to confirm.

11. In the lower right, click Close to close the Delete Browsing History window.

12. Click the Security tab, and then click Default level.

13. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.

14. Click Reset.

15. Click Close.

16. Click OK to close the Internet Options window.

17. Click X in the upper right to close the Internet Explorer window.

To clear cache, cookies, and history, and then reset Web settings for Internet Explorer 6.0:

1. Close any Internet browser windows that may be open on your computer.

2. Click Start, select Programs or All Programs, and then click Internet Explorer.

3. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.

4. On the General tab, under the Temporary Internet files section, click Delete Files to clear cache.

5. Check the Delete all offline content box, and then click OK for confirmation.

6. Under the Temporary Internet files section, click Delete Cookies to clear cookies.

7. Click OK to confirm.

8. Under the History section, click Clear History to clear history.

9. Click the Yes button to confirm the deletion.

10. Click the Security tab, and then click Default level.

11. Click the Advanced tab, click Reset Defaults, and then click Apply.

12. Click the Programs tab, and then click Reset Web Settings.

13. Uncheck Also reset my home page, and then click Yes.

14. Click OK.

15. Click OK to close the Internet Options window.

16. Click X in the upper right to close the Internet Explorer window.

To clear cookies, history, and cache on Firefox:

1. Click Start, select All Programs or Programs, select Mozilla Firefox, and then click the Mozilla Firefox icon.

2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Clear Private Data.

3. Click the Browsing History, Cache, and Cookies boxes to place check marks in them, ensure that other boxes do not have check marks in them, and then click Clear Private Data Now.

4. Click the File menu, and then click Exit.
