Managing Favorite Places on AOL Desktop for Mac

Add a Favorite Place

1. Browse to the Web site that you want to save as your favorite.

2. On the toolbar of the browser window, click the heart icon.

3. If you want to edit the name of the Web page, then type the name in the Type your Favorite's name: box. Click the Choose where to keep your Favorite: drop-down menu to open it, and then select a location from the list.

4. Click the Add button to save your favorite place.

Create a Favorite Place Folder

1. On the toolbar of the browser window, click the heart icon.

2. Click the + button in the lower-left corner of the screen.

3. An untitled folder is created under Favorites. Type the name you want to assign to your favorite place, and then tap the Enter key on your keyboard.

Edit a Favorite Place

1. On the toolbar of the browser window, click the heart icon.

2. Click the favorite place you want to edit to highlight it, then click the Edit button in the lower left corner of the screen.

3. You can edit the name or the URL of your favorite place. Once you've finished, click the OK button.

Delete a Favorite Place

1. On the toolbar of the browser window, click the heart icon.

2. Select favorite place you want to delete, and then click the - button in the lower left corner of the screen.

3. Click the Delete button to confirm the deletion.

How do I Add an Icon to the Toolbar?

To add an icon to the toolbar

1. Right-click anywhere on the toolbar, and then click Customize Toolbar.

2. A window containing various icons comes up. Drag and drop the icon you want to use into the toolbar.

To remove an icon from the toolbar, right-click the icon, and then click Remove Item.

How can I get the Default Toolbar Back?

To get the default toolbar

1. Right-click anywhere on the toolbar, and then click Customize Toolbar.

Why can't I see the Icon I Added to the Toolbar?

If you cannot see the icon that you added to the toolbar, it means that you have added more icons than the toolbar can accommodate. To view the icons, click on the expandable menu.

Browser settings on AOL Desktop for Mac

You can use the Web preferences on AOL® Desktop for Mac® to customize your browser settings and to perform simple internet related tasks such as deleting cookies and clearing cache.

To access Web preferences on AOL Desktop for Mac:

1. Click the AOL Desktop v10.1 menu, and then click Preferences.

2. Click the Web icon

3. Choose from the following options:

  • Home Page: The default Web page that comes up when you launch the AOL® software is http://welcome.aol.com. If you replace this with another Web site of your choice, that Web page comes up every time you click the Web icon in the toolbar.
  • Download files to: The default location to save the files that you download through the AOL® software is the desktop of your computer. If you want to change the default location, click the Download files to: drop-down menu, and then click Other. Navigate to the location you want to save your files to, and then click the Select button.
  • At startup:

    • The AOL.com Web page comes up by default as soon as you launch the AOL software. If you do not want the default setting, click the Open a browser window box to clear it.
    • Placing a check mark in the click opens a link in a new tab box activates a keyboard shortcut. When a link is clicked upon while the Command key on the keyboard is pressed, that link opens in a new browser tab.
    • Click the Select tabs and windows as they are created box to place a check mark in it, if you'd like the browser window or tab that you have last opened to appear in the foreground.
    • Placing a check mark in the Click opens a targeted link in a new tab box will ensure that any targeted link in Web page, when clicked upon, opens in a new tab.
    • Pop-ups are blocked on the AOL software by default. If you want pop-ups to appear, uncheck the Block Pop-ups box.
  • Cookies: To delete the cookies stored in the computer, click the Remove All Cookies button, and then click OK to confirm.
  • Cache: To clear the cache from the computer, click the Empty Cache button, and then click OK to confirm.

4. Click the red button in the upper left to close the Web window

When you’re online using the AOL Desktop for Mac software, you don't have to sign off to switch from one Username to another.

1. In the upper left, click the AOL Desktop menu.

2. Select Switch Username, and then click the screen name you wish to sign on to.

1. Click the AOL Desktop v10.1 menu, and then click Preferences.

2. Click the Web icon.

3. Next to Cache, click Empty Cache.

Tip: You can also clear cache by clicking the Web menu on the AOL toolbar, clicking Empty Cache, and then clicking OK.
