Restart the AOL Desktop Software

Sometimes the easiest solution is the best. Restarting the AOL Desktop for Mac software can often fix many problems.

To restart the AOL Desktop for Mac software, in the upper left, click AOL Desktop, and then click Quit AOL Desktop.

After the program has completely shut down, click the AOL Desktop icon to restart the software.

Restart Your Computer

If you’re having trouble with the AOL Desktop for Mac software, often restarting your computer can fix the problem.

To restart your Mac, in the upper left, click the apple icon and then click Restart.

Note: Please quit other programs that may be open before restarting your computer. Check Connection

Trouble Connecting to the internet

If you’re having trouble connecting your AOL Desktop for Mac software to the internet, please visit our connection troubleshooting help articles:

Wireless Connections:
Check if your wireless connection is turned on. In the upper right, click the wireless icon and make sure your wireless signal is selected.

Note: To check if your home network is up and running, in the upper left, click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences. Double-click the Network icon and make sure there's a green dot to the left of the Ethernet connection OR Wi-Fi.

Wired Broadband Connections:
If you use an ethernet cable to connect to the internet, please visit our Troubleshooting a Broadband Connection help article.

Dial-up Connections:
If you use dial-up to connect to the internet, please visit our help article Troubleshooting a Dial-up Connection.

Disable "Restore Windows" Preference

Disabling the Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps option within your system preferences could prevent AOL Desktop for Mac from quitting unexpectedly as well as blank pop-up windows.

To disable this option:

1. Go to System Preferences.

2. Select General.

3. Near the bottom of the window, uncheck Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps.

4. Launch the AOL Desktop Software.

IMPORTANT: Before closing any windows or making any changes, select AOL Desktop from the top right hand corner and select Quit AOL Desktop.

5. Re-open the program.

That's it. You're done!

Delete the Preference Files

To delete the Preference Files for the AOL Desktop for Mac Software:

1. Click your desktop background to make sure no applications are selected.

2. Press and hold down the Option key on your keyboard, and in the navigation menu at the top, click Go.

3. Double-click Library.

Note: You need to keep holding down the Option key in the Go menu to see Library.

4. In the Library folder, scroll down and double-click the Preferences folder.

5. Delete preference files starting with com.aol.xxxdesktop.

6. Restart the AOL Desktop for Mac software.

Move Your Account Information to Your Desktop

To move your AOL account information to your desktop:

1. Click your desktop background to make sure no applications are selected.

2. Press and hold down the Option key on your keyboard, and in the navigation menu at the top, click Go.

3. Click Library.

Note: You need to keep holding down the Option key in the Go menu to see Library.

4. In the Library folder, double-click Application Support and then double-click AOL Desktop.

5. Click and hold, and drag the entire AOL Desktop folder to your Mac OS desktop - or - move your User folder to the desktop (if you have multiple accounts on your Mac).

6. Restart the AOL Desktop for Mac software.

Uninstall/reinstall the AOL Desktop application

Uninstalling and then reinstalling the AOL Desktop for Mac software can fix many problems. To uninstall the AOL Desktop for Mac software:

1. Click your desktop background to make sure no applications are selected.

2. In the main navigation menu at the top, click the Go menu and then click Applications.

3. Click and hold, and drag the AOL Desktop application icon to the Trash.

4. In the upper left, click the Finder menu, and click Empty Trash.

Run Permissions Repair

1. Click your desktop background to make sure no applications are selected.

2. In the main navigation menu at the top, click the Go menu and then click Utilities.

3. Double-click Disk Utility.

4. Click Macintosh HD (unless you’ve renamed your hard drive).

5. Click Repair Disk Permissions.

6. Start the AOL Desktop for Mac software.

Note: You may need to run permission repair a couple of times. The first time may fix a folder, but not the contents of that folder so please run permissions repair at least twice.
