How do I view the status of sent mail using the AOL Desktop Software?

You can view the status of an e-mail that you have sent from the AOL software to another AOL e-mail address. However, you cannot check the status of e-mails sent to e-mail addresses other than AOL.

To view the status of a sent e-mail on the AOL software

1. Sign on to the AOL software.

2. Click the Read button to open your mailbox.

3. Click the Sent tab.

4. Highlight the e-mail whose status you want to check, and then click the Status button.

5. You will see the status of the e-mail.

  • If the addressee has read the e-mail, you'll see Read displayed in the status.

  • If the addressee has not yet read the e-mail, you'll see not yet read displayed in the status.

6. Click OK to close the status window.

How do I set AOL Desktop as my default email client for Windows?

Hey there! If you’re looking to set your AOL Desktop software as your default email client, you've come to the right place! With the AOL Desktop software as your default email client, any time you click on an email address to send an email, or use any other mail-related functions on your PC, your AOL Desktop software will open. The instructions below will help you change the settings on your PC to the default AOL Mail settings. Click on your operating system below to get started.

Windows 7 / Vista

1. Click Start.

2. Type “default programs” in the Search box and hit Enter.

3. Click Set your default programs.

4. Select AOL Desktop on the left-hand side.

5. At the bottom of the screen, click Choose defaults for this program

6. Check the Select All check box.

7. Click Save. You’re all set! Your AOL Desktop software will now be set as your default email client.


Windows 98 / 2000 / XP

1. Click Start.

2. Click Control Panel. For Windows XP users: If you’re in Category View, click Switch to Classic View.

3. Double-click Internet Options.

4. Click the Programs tab.

5. Select AOL Desktop software (e.g., AOL Desktop 9.6, AOL 9.0 VR) from the E-mail drop-down.  

6. Click OK. Your AOL Desktop software will now be set as your default email client.

General Mail Settings

The Mail Settings window is used to configure several different options for your email and AOL Mailbox. This window can be accessed using AOL Keyword: Mail Settings. Alternatively, from the menu bar, click Mail and select Mail Settings. For more information on the settings available, please select an option below:

IMPORTANT: If you want to change your font settings, please see AOL Keyword: Text & Font Settings.

The following settings and options are found under the General tab:

Mail Away Message

If you click the 'here' link, in the 'To change your Mail Away Message settings, click here' message, the Mail Away Message screen will appear. You can use this screen to adjust your Mail Away Message. We advise using a Mail Away Message if you'll be away from your computer for a long period of time and wish to notify your colleagues, friends, or family that you'll be gone. Any email you receive while you have a Mail Away Message active will cause your account to auto-respond with the option you select on this screen.

By default, show me mail from

Selecting Everyone will set your Mailbox to display email from everyone. The only email you will not see will be any that has been filtered by the spam filter.

Selecting People I know will set your Mailbox to display email from only people you know, which are email addresses or people who have been added to your Address Book or Buddy List.

Sort mail in my mailbox

This option allows you to select how your email is sorted in your AOL Mailbox.

  • Type sorts by AOL mail type. For more information, please see Identify AOL Official Mail, Priority Mail, and Certified Mail in AOL Desktop Software.
  • Date (newest at top) lists your newest emails at the top of the window. 
  • Date (newest at bottom) lists your newest emails at the bottom of the window.
  • E-Mail Address sorts by email addresses in alphabetical order, from A (top) to Z (bottom).
  • Subject sorts by the title of the email in alphabetical order, from A (top) to Z (bottom).

Notify me before opening mail containing pictures

If this check box is checked, whenever you open an email that contains pictures, a popup window will display asking you if you want to proceed. If this check box is unchecked, you will not experience a popup window when opening emails containing pictures.

Retain all mail I read in my Saved Mail Folder

If this check box is checked, any email you read will automatically be saved to your Saved Mail Folder. If this check box is unchecked, any email you read will not be saved to your Saved Mail Folder unless you manually save them.

Confirm that mail has been sent

If this check box is checked, any email you send will ask the email's recipient for a delivery receipt. A delivery receipt is a simple confirmation that the recipient received the email. If this check box is unchecked, any email you send will not ask for a delivery receipt.

Perform a spell check before sending mail

If this check box is checked, your AOL Desktop software will perform a spell check on your email when you click Send. If this check box is unchecked, no spell check operation will be performed when sending email.

Retain all mail I send in my Mail I've Sent Folder

If this check box is checked, all email you send will automatically save to your Mail I've Sent Folder. If this check box is unchecked, email you send will not be saved to your Mail I've Sent Folder.

Hide images and disable links in mail from unknown senders

If this check box is checked, all images and links will be hidden or disabled in email you receive from unknown senders (senders that aren't in your Address Book or Buddy List). If this check box is unchecked, images and links will display normally in all email you receive.

Reply Quote Style

This setting allows you to choose how quoted email displays when you click Reply to respond to an email:

  • Blue Bar: This option will place a blue bar on the left side of the quoted email you respond to.
  • Indent: This option will indent the portion of the email you respond to
  • None: This option won't do anything to the quoted email you respond to.

Advanced Mail Settings

The Mail Settings window is used to configure several different options for your email and AOL Mailbox. This window can be accessed using AOL Keyword: Mail Settings. Alternatively, from the menu bar, click Mail and select Mail Settings. For more information on the settings available, please select an option below:

The following settings and options are found under the Advanced tab:

When reading mail in Full View

The header on your email contains the subject line of the email, the date the email was sent, the email addresses of the sender and the recipients, and internet header information. You can change the way the email header is displayed by choosing one of the following options:

  • Always minimize headers: Email headers will be minimized. They will not be displayed unless you open them by clicking the expand arrow.
  • Always minimize headers when I scroll: Email headers will be displayed when you first open the email, but will minimize as you scroll through the message, giving you more space to view the email.
  • Never minimize headers: Email headers will always be displayed at the top of your email window, unless you manually click the minimize arrow.

Play sound when new mail is delivered

If this check box is checked, an audio alert will play when any new email appears in your Mailbox. If this check box is unchecked, no audio alert will play when you receive new email.

Show addresses as Buddy Info links

If this check box is checked, a buddy icon will appear next to any currently-signed-on AOL Username email addresses in email headers. Clicking the buddy icon will open an IM window with that Username.

If this check box is unchecked, clicking an email address in the header will open a new email addressed to the clicked address.

Display next message when current message is deleted

If this option is enabled: when viewing an email, clicking the Delete button will delete that email and open the next email from your Mailbox.

If this option is disabled: when viewing an email, clicking the Delete button will delete that email, close the email window, and return you to your Mailbox.

Present picture quality options when inserting pictures

If this option is enabled, inserting a picture into an email will cause a message to pop up, asking you to choose what picture quality you want for that picture. Full will include the whole picture as is. Optimized will reduce the picture quality and size, but will cause the email to send faster. We highly recommend using the Optimized option if you are using Dial-up.

If this option is disabled, you will not receive a popup message and the Optimized option will be used.

Close mail after it has been sent

If this option is enabled, the Write Mail window will close after sending the email.

If this option is disabled, the Write Mail window will remain open even after the mail has been sent.

Confirm when mail is marked to send later

If this check box is checked, when you schedule an email to be sent later, you will receive a message asking you to confirm if you want to move the email to the Mail Waiting To Be Sent folder.

If this check box is unchecked, you will not receive a message when you choose to send an email later, and the email will be automatically moved to your Mail Waiting To Be Sent folder.

Remind me at Sign On if I have mail waiting to be sent

If this check box is checked, when you sign on, you will receive a message reminding you that you have email in your Mail Waiting To Be Sent folder.

If this check box is unchecked, you will not receive a reminder at sign on if you have email in your Mail Waiting To Be Sent folder.

Retain all embedded images in read mail

If this check box is checked, all embedded images found in email you read will be saved to a AOL subfolder within your C:\My Documents\My Pictures folder.

If this check box is unchecked, embedded images found in email you read will not be saved.

Use my Address Book and Buddy List to auto-suggest names when sending e-mails

If this check box is checked, a Suggestions box will display listing any related email addresses from your Address Book or Buddy List when you enter the first few letters of an email address when composing a new email. You can choose an email address from this list by clicking it.

If this check box is unchecked, no Suggestions box will appear when entering email addresses when composing new email.

Identify AOL Official Mail, Priority Mail, and Certified Mail in AOL Desktop Software

Sometimes you'll see special icons beside messages from AOL, as well as from certain other select senders.

These are to verify that the messages are legitimate and authentic. They are not scams. They are sent from reliable, trusted sources.

Here are the icons for each of these three special types of mail:

AOL Certified Mail

Certified Mail is from certified commercial, nonprofit and government senders. To spot a Certified Mail message, look for the green envelope next to a message in your inbox. You'll also see the green envelope in the upper-left of the open message.

AOL Priority Mail

Priority Mail is an important email sent by AOL or users using certain AOL products. To spot a Priority Mail message, look for the blue envelope next to a message in your inbox. You'll also see this icon in the upper-left corner of the open message.

AOL Official Mail

Official Mail contains important information for AOL members. To spot a Official Mail message, look for the brown envelope icon next to a message in your inbox. You'll also see this icon inside the special dark blue border around the open message.

Setting up AOL Mail Filters

With AOL Mail filters, you can move incoming messages to specific folders and send alerts to AIM or your mobile phone.

To access and configure your Filters:

1. Visit http://mailsvc.aol.com/en-us/Lite/MailControls/FilterSettings.aspx.

Note: You can access this link only if you’re logged in to the AOL Desktop Software.

2. Click New filter. The Create a Filter screen appears.

3. Enter a name for the filter in the Create a filter called field.

4. Enter your Filter criteria. Messages that meet the criteria you set here can be filtered based on the options in Step 5.

5. Select what you want to do with messages that match the Filter criteria:

 

  • Move to a specified folder
  • Send an alert to your AIM Username or to your mobile phone

 

6. Click Create. A window will appear saying, “Your action succeeded!” 

7. Click OK. Your filter will now be in effect.

Notes:

 

  • To edit existing filters, click Edit next to the desired filter on the Filter Settings screen.
  • Filters are applied in the order they display on the Filter Settings screen.

How do I manage my email signature in the AOL software?

Note: Upgrade to the latest version of the AOL Desktop software to take advantage of great new features!

The AOL software allows you to create up to 5 email signatures. You can add both text and pictures to your signature. You can also set one of your signatures as the default signature, which will be added automatically to the end of every email that you compose.

To create an email signature

1. Sign on to the AOL software, and then click Write.

2. On the bottom right of the Write Mail window, click the Signatures drop-down menu, and then click Set Up Signatures.

3. The Set up Signatures window appears. Click Create.

4. The Create Signature window appears. In the Signature Name box, type a name for the signature (for example, work, home, or mailing list).

5. In the Signature box, type the text that you want to use as your signature. You can add text styling features like a different font or font color from the style toolbar. You can add pictures/images (of the following types: .bmp, .jpg, .gif, or .art) by using the camera icon; you can add favorites by using the heart icon.

Note: Ensure that the Signature box is not left empty. If you leave the Signature box empty and forward an email to your buddy, your buddy may receive a blank email.

6. Click OK.

7. Close all open windows.

To modify an email signature

1. Sign on to the AOL software. Click Write.

2. On the bottom right of the Write Mail window, click the Signatures drop-down menu, and then click Set Up Signatures.

3. The Set up Signatures window appears. Select the signature that you want to modify, and then click Edit.

4. The Edit Signature window appears. In the Signature Name box, modify the name if required.

5. In the Signature box, modify the content (text/image/hyperlink), and then click OK.

Note: Ensure that the Signature box is not left empty. If you leave the Signature box empty and forward an email to your buddy, your buddy may receive a blank email.

6. Close all open windows.

To delete an email signature

1. Sign on to the AOL software. Click Write.

2. On the bottom right of the Write Mail window, click the Signatures drop-down menu, and then click Set Up Signatures.

3. The Set up Signatures window appears. Select the signature that you want to delete, and then click Delete.

4. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.

5. Close all open windows.

Save emails in and access emails from Saved on My PC or Saved on AOL folders

Hey there! If you need any help saving your emails to either your PC or the AOL server, you’ve come to the right place. Saved on PC and Saved on AOL email storage folders both offer powerful and flexible ways to manage your email.

Within the AOL software, your email storage folders can be accessed from the Read icon on the toolbar. Emails saved on your computer can be found in the Saved on My PC folder and emails saved on the AOL servers can be found in the Saved on AOL folders. Your Saved on AOL email folder can be accessed from anywhere, so long as you can sign into the AOL service.

Save emails in and access emails from the Saved on My PC folder

The emails saved in your Saved on My PC folder will only be accessible on the computer where the folder was saved. If you’re using the AOL software on a different computer, you won’t be able to access these emails.

To save an email in the Saved On My PC folder

1. Start the AOL software and sign on with your AOL Username and password.
2. On the AOL toolbar, click the Read icon.

3. Highlight the email that you want to save by clicking on it. To save the email on your computer, click the Save drop-down menu, select On My PC, and then click the folder to which you want to save the email.

To access an email Saved on My PC folder

1. Start the AOL software and sign on with your AOL Username and password.
2. On the AOL Toolbar, click Read.
3. On the left corner, under My Mail Folders, scroll down until you see the Saved on My PC folder. Click the Saved on My PC folder to access your saved mails.

 


Save emails in and access emails from the Saved on AOL folder

If you’re always on the go or use AOL software on multiple computers, you can store email messages in the online folder called the Saved on AOL folder. This folder can be accessed from any computer. You can access this folder even if you sign on to the AOL software as Guest.

To save an email in the Saved On AOL folder

1. Start the AOL software and sign on with your AOL Username and password.
2. On the AOL toolbar, click Read.

3. To save the email in the Saved on AOL folder, click Save, select On AOL, and then select the folder into which you wish to save the email.

To access emails from the Saved on AOL folder

1. Start the AOL software and sign on with your AOL Username and password.
2. On the AOL Toolbar, click Read.
3. On the left corner, under My Mail Folders, scroll down until you see the Saved on AOL folder. Click the Saved on AOL folder to access your saved mails.
