You can enable ActiveX controls on your web browser to download useful programs from the internet. ActiveX can provide great interactive features but also bring the risk of allowing viruses and other unwanted malware onto your computer. To control this risk, Microsoft has developed a registration system so web browsers can identify and authenticate an ActiveX control before downloading it.
To enable ActiveX settings:
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Click the Tools menu, then click Internet Options....
- Click the Security tab.
- Click the Internet icon, then click Default level to restore the Security level to Medium.
- Click OK.
- Alternatively, you can click Custom Level, scroll down the list of settings to the ActiveX Controls and plug-ins section, click to select either the Enable or Prompt option under Download signed ActiveX controls, click OK, then click Yes to confirm this setting.
- As these controls may have previously been disabled, selecting Prompt instead of Enable is a more secure option. This will prompt the browser to seek your confirmation before downloading anything that requires ActiveX controls or plug-ins.
