How do I use other email applications to send and receive mail from my AOL Mail account?

Here's how to read and send AOL Mail messages using other email applications:

In Outlook, Thunderbird, or whichever email application you’re using, find the Add Account Menu option or the Add new Account area in 'Account Settings'.

You might be prompted to select either IMAP or POP. AOL Mail supports both. What’s the difference?

Difference between IMAP and POP

IMAP

POP

These days, IMAP is the more common option. It keeps your email (and folders) on the remote email server, which means you have access from multiple locations – including mobile. Requires you to download your Inbox (no folders) to your computer before you can read it—and, depending on settings, your email is deleted from the server as soon as it’s downloaded.

Here’s how to access AOL Mail in another email application.

IMAP and POP Configuration Instructions:

IMAP Setup Information

  • IMAP Username: YourUsername@aol.com (or @love.com, @games.com, etc.)
  • Incoming Mail Server: imap.aol.com (Use port 143 for standard or 993 for SSL connections)
  • SMTP Outgoing Server Address: smtp.aol.com Set the port to 587
  • SMTP Username: YourUsername@aol.com (or @love.com, @games.com, etc.)
  • SMTP Password: password you use to login to Mail

For a secure connection, check the SSL option for IMAP/POP and TLS for SMTP in your mail program.

POP Setup Information

  • POP Username:YourUsername@aol.com (or @love.com, @games.com, etc.)
  • Incoming Mail Server: pop.aol.com (Use port 110 for standard or 995 for SSL connections)
    • Remember to check the option to Leave messages on the server
  • SMTP Outgoing Server Address: smtp.aol.com Set the port to 587
  • SMTP Username: YourUsername@aol.com (or @love.com, @games.com, etc.)
  • SMTP Password: password you use to login to Mail

For a secure connection, check the SSL option for IMAP/POP and TLS for SMTP in your mail program.

Here’s what you won’t get or see when accessing AOL Mail from another application:

  • AIM: Your buddies!
  • Message Status: You will not be able to check the status of a sent message or retrieve unopened email from AOL users.
  • Spam: The Report Spam button is not available on IMAP. To report messages as spam, move them to your email application’s Spam folder.
  • Deleted mail: Some applications show deleted email in the original folder with the message flagged for deletion (such as Outlook or Eudora), while other applications do not show these emails.

Are Your Emails Getting Deleted? If you're missing emails when you sign into mail.aol.com, make sure you select "Leave messages on server" in the other email's POP settings. Here's how (and why :-).
