Installing McAfee

You can install McAfee on up to three computers per one subscription. AOL members can install McAfee by visiting AOL Internet Security Central: Download McAfee. Non-members and those on the Free AOL plan can subscribe and download McAfee by visiting McAfee Internet Security Suite - Special edition from AOL for a substantially discounted annual fee.

Before you download McAfee Security Suite - Special edition from AOL, check whether your computer meets the Minimum system requirements to install McAfee Internet Security Suite.

Install McAfee Internet Security Suite - Special edition from AOL

If you've already purchased McAfee Internet Security Suite - Special edition from AOL as part of your AOL MyBenefits plan or from Lifestore, you can start downloading McAfee:

  • via your AOL OnePoint dashboard, click Download Now;
  • via your MyBenefits dashboard at mybenefits.aol.com, click Protect Yourself Now;
  • via your Order Confirmation email, click Download Now or Get Started Now (login, if prompted);
  • via your Lifestore account at myaccount.aol.com, click Download Now or Get Started.

1. If you are using the Order Confirmation email to download McAfee, go to your AOL inbox to see your Order Confirmation email. Click on the Get Started Now button in the email to start downloading the McAfee software.

2. Use the email address and temporary password provided in the email to log in to home.mcafee.com and log in with your AOL email address and McAfee password, and then click Log In.

3. Under the Products and Subscriptions tab, click Download.

4. After reading the McAfee Consumer Products End User License Agreement, click I Agree.

5. Within the Download Your McAfee Software page, make note of the serial number for your software. You will need it during the registration process.

6. Review the steps to complete your installation, then click Download.

7. A pop-up window will appear with a message, asking Do you want to run or save McAfeeSetup-Serial.exe from download.mcafee.com?, click Run.

8. When the McAfee Setup files are completely downloaded from the internet, another message will ask if you want McAfee Master Installer to make changes to your computer; click Yes.

9. McAfee will clean threats on your PC.

10. Ensure Complete (Recommended) is selected, and then click Next.

11. McAfee will check your PC for conflicting anti-virus software.

12. McAfee will download the software installation files. This could take some time depending on the speed of your internet connection.

13. Opt in or out of the McAfee Customer Response option, then click Next.

14. The installation process will begin..

15. The installation is complete. Click Finish.

Uninstalling McAfee

Follow the steps below to uinstall McAfee Internet Security Suite - Special edition from AOL using the McAfee Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) tool or manually unistall McAfee on Windows Vista or Windows XP/2000.

You will need to know the version of Microsoft Windows operating system installed on your computer. If you do not know how to find this information, follow the instructions given in the online help article Determining your version of Microsoft Windows.

Solutions

Use the McAfee Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) tool to uninstall McAfee

To download and use the MCPR tool:

1. Go to http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe and download the MCPR.exe file.

2. Click Save.

3. Save the MCPR.exe file at a desired location (for example, on the Desktop), and then click Save.

4. In the Download complete window, click Close.

5. Navigate to the destination where you’ve saved the MCPR.exe file, and then double-click the MCPR.exe icon to begin the installation.

6. Click Run.

7. In the McAfee Software Removal window, click Next.

8. After reading the End User License Agreement, select Agree and click Next.

9. In the Security Validation window, enter the characters you see and click Next.

10. In the second Security Validation window, enter the characters you see again and click Next.

11. The MCPR tool will begin to remove McAfee. This may take a few minutes. Once the installation is complete, the file immediately starts the clean-up process.

12. Click Restart to restart your computer.

13. Click Yes to restart your computer. Once the computer restarts McAfee and other AOL security products will be removed.

IMPORTANT: Uninstalling the product doesn’t automatically cancel your subscription and you will continue to be charged. To cancel your subscription, please access your account at My Account.

Uninstall McAfee Internet Security Suite - Special edition from AOL

Below are instructions on how to uninstall if you have Windows 8, Windows 7/Vista, or Windows XP/2000. Scroll down to read the uninstall directions up need for your operating system.

1. From your desktop, right-click the start button. A pop-up menu appears.

2. In the pop-up menu, select Control Panel. The Control Panel appears.

3. In the Control Panel, under Programs click the Uninstall a program link. The Programs menu appears.

4. In the Programs menu, select Uninstall a program. The Uninstall or change a program screen appears.

5. In the Name column, double-click the McAfee SecurityCenter link. The Remove McAfee Software screen appears.

6. Select the McAfee SecurityCenter checkbox and then select the Remove all files for this program option.

7. Click the Remove button. A warning message pop-up appears.

8. A pop-up appears warning you that, “You still have an active subscription.” If you want to cancel the uninstall process, click the Cancel button. But if you want to continue to uninstall McAfee, click the Remove button and two screens appear.

The first screen is a, “Your PC is at Risk” message.

This screen tells you that after you remove McAfee, your computer is no longer protected. Click the Close button to close this message.
 
The other screen that appears is the Removal Status screen. This screen stays up until the removal process is complete.

9. After the uninstall is complete, the Software Removed screen appears

10.  The uninstallation of McAfee is not fully complete until you restart your computer. Click the Restart now button. Your computer will restart. You have now successfully uninstalled McAfee SecurityCenter.


Windows 7/Vista

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Click the Programs icon, then click the Programs and Features link.

Note: If you are in the Control Panel Home view, click the Programs link, and then click the Programs and Features link.

 

3. Click McAfee SecurityCenter to highlight it, then click Uninstall/Change.

Note: If prompted by the User Account Control message, click Continue.

4. Check the box and click Remove.

5. Click Remove.

6. The Removal Status section shows the progress of McAfee SecurityCenter being uninstalled.

7. Click Restart now to restart your computer and complete removal of the McAfee software.

Windows XP/2000

1. Click Start, then click Control Panel.

Note: If using Windows 2000, click the Start button, select Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. In the Control Panel window, click the Add or Remove Programs link.

Note: If you are in the Classic view, double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.

3. Click McAfee SecurityCenter to highlight it and then click Change/Remove.

4. Click all the boxes to place check marks in them, then click Remove.

5. Click Remove.

6. The Removal Status section shows the progress of McAfee SecurityCenter being uninstalled.

7. Click Restart now to restart your computer and complete the removal of the McAfee software.
