How do I save a Favorite Place?

To save a webpage as a favorite:

  1. Navigate to the site that you want to mark as a Favorite Place.
  2. On the upper right of the window, click the heart-shaped icon.
  3. On the window that appears, click Add to Favorites, then select the desired folder where you want to save the web site.

Notes:

  • Any AOL website that has a heart icon on the upper right of the window can be added to your Favorite Places list.
  • If you want to quickly share a link to one of your Favorites via email, click the notepad icon on the upper right of the window. If you'd like to quickly share one of your Favorites via instant message, click the yellow buddy icon on the upper right of the window.

How do I organize my Favorite Places list?

You can organize your Favorite Places by creating folders in your list and grouping your favorites into those folders.

Create a new folder in Favorite Places

To create a new folder in Favorite Places:

  1. On the right side of the AOL toolbar, click Favorites.
  2. At the bottom of the My Favorite Places window, click New.
  3. Select the New Folderoption.
  4. Type a name for the folder, and then click OK.

Edit a Favorite Place

To edit a Favorite Place:

  1. On the right side of the AOL toolbar, click Favorites.
  2. In the My Favorite Places window, select the item that you want to change.
  3. At the bottom of the window, click Edit.
  4. Type a new name for the Favorite Place and/or update the internet address.
  5. Click OK.

Edit a Favorite Places folder

To edit a Favorite Places folder:

  1. On the right side of the AOL toolbar, click Favorites.
  2. In the My Favorite Places window, highlight the folder that you want to edit by clicking it.
  3. At the bottom of the window, click Edit.
  4. Type a new name for the folder, and then press Enter on your keyboard.

Move an item to a different Favorites folder

To move an item to a different Favorites folder:

  1. Double-click the folder name that contains the Favorite Place that you wish to move.
  2. Click the heart-shaped icon of the Favorite Place that you want to move, and then drag it to the desired folder.

How do I sort my Favorite Places?

You can manually list your Favorite Places in any order of your choice.

To sort your Favorite Places:

  1. On the right side of the AOL toolbar, click Favorites.
  2. If necessary, double-click the folder containing the Favorite Place that you want to sort.
  3. Click the heart-shaped icon next to a Favorite Place, and then drag the highlighted item to the appropriate location on the list.

How do I return to a Favorite Place?

Once you have saved a web site into your Favorite Places, you can return to it easily.

To return to your Favorite Places:

  1. On the right side of the AOL toolbar, click Favorites.
  2. If necessary, double-click the folder where you saved your Favorite Place to open it.
  3. Scroll through the list, click the Favorite that you wish to open, and then click Go.

How do I search for a Favorite Place?

If you can't find a Favorite place, you can search for it in your Favorite Places list.

To search for a Favorite Place:

  1. On the right side of the AOL toolbar, click Favorites.
  2. In the My Favorite Places window, double-click all the displayed folders. The folders will open listing the Favorite Places that they contain.
  3. Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, and press the letter F.
  4. In the Enter word(s) box, type the name of the Favorite Place that you want to locate, and then click Find.

How do I delete a Favorite Place?

If you are not using a Favorite Place or the site is no longer in service, you can remove it from your Favorite Places list.

To delete a Favorite Place link:

  1. On the right side of the AOL toolbar, click Favorites.
  2. In the My Favorite Places window, click the folder or Favorite Place that you want to delete.

    Note: If you want to delete multiple Favorite Places simultaneously, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, and then click all the bookmarks that you want to delete.

  3. Click Delete.
  4. Click Yes when prompted to confirm the action.

How do I control access to Favorite Places?

Your Favorite Places are internet sites that you've marked for quick access. These are stored on the AOL server, and you can access them even if you've signed in to another computer as a guest.

To control access to your Favorite Places:

  1. Go to AOL Keyword: Favorite Places Preferences.

    Note: This keyword can be accessed only within the AOL Desktop Software; however, the Keyword feature is not available in AOL Desktop v10.1.

  2. Click to select the check box next to Only store my Favorite Places on my computer. Clicking the box again will clear the check box and disable this feature.
  3. Click Save.

How do I import Favorites from Internet Explorer

If you have stored Favorites on Internet Explorer, you can access them on AOL Desktop.

To import Internet Explorer favorites:

  1. On the right side of the AOL toolbar, click Favorites.
  2. Click Manage.
  3. In the Manage Your Favorite Places window, click Import your Favorites from Internet Explorer.

How do I manually restore AOL Favorite Places in Windows 8/7/Vista?

1. Close AOL Desktop.

2. Click Start on the Windows toolbar. In the Search box, type "system" and click AOL System Information. If prompted by the User Account Control window, click Yes or Continue. The AOL System Information 2.0 window will appear.

IMPORTANT: If the AOL System Information window doesn't appear, look for a flashing tab on the Windows taskbar. If a flashing tab is displayed, click the tab. The User Account Control window is displayed. Click Yes. The AOL System Information window will then appear.

Note:

  • If you are using Windows 8, on the Windows taskbar, right-click the AOL icon, and then click System Information. If prompted by the User Account Control, click Yes.

  • If you are unable to open AOL System Information, go to our help article Open Data Folder to find out how to manually open the Data Folder. When finished, continue from Step 4.

3. Click the AOL Software or AOL tab, and then click Open Data Folder.

4. Remember the folder that it is highlighted (e.g., in the image below, it is the C_AOL 9.5, AOL 9.5b folder).

5. Click the C_ AOL #.#x folder above the one that is highlighted (where # represents a the version of the AOL Desktop Software installed and x represents a letter that denotes the number of times the same version of AOL Desktop was installed on your computer). This folder is the previous copy or version of the AOL Desktop Software that was installed on your computer and should contain the previous copy of your Favorite Places.
For example, when you first install AOL 9.5, the folder C_AOL 9.5, AOL 9.5 is created. When you install AOL 9.5 again, C_AOL 9.5, AOL 9.5a is created. If you install AOL 9.5 a third time, the folder C_AOL 9.5, AOL 9.5b is created.

6. Double-click the organize folder.

7. Right-click the appropriate Username that has no extension after it, and then click Copy.

8. Click the folder that was first highlighted (e.g., in the image below, it is the C_AOL 9.5, AOL 9.5b folder).

9. Double-click the organize folder.

10. Click the Organize drop-down menu, and then click Paste.

11. Click Copy and Replace to replace the Username file.

12. Close all open windows.

Transfer your Favorite Places to another Username using AOL 9.0 or higher

To transfer your Favorite Places to another Username using AOL 9.0 or higher:

1. On the AOL toolbar, click Favorites.

2. Click Manage.

3. Click Save My Favorite Places as a Favorites File on my Computer.

4. Click Save.

5. Switch to the Username to which you want to copy your Favorite Places.

6. On the AOL toolbar, click Favorites.

7. Click Manage.

8. Select one of the following:

  • Replace My Favorite Places with a Favorites File: Use this option to overwrite your current list of Favorite Places.
  • Append a Favorites File to My Favorite Places: Use this option to supplement your existing list with the Favorites from your other Username.

9. Navigate to the Favorites file that you saved, click the file to highlight it, and then click Open. If you choose to replace your Favorite Places with the new file, you'll need to click OK twice.

10. Close the Favorite Places window.

Note: You can share your list of Favorite Places with friends who use AOL 9.0 by mailing them your saved Favorites file (Favorite Places.pfc) and having them follow Steps 6 through 10.

Make a backup copy of your Favorite Places in AOL 9.0 or higher

1. On the AOL toolbar, click Favorites.

2. Click Manage.

3. Select Save My Favorite Places as a Favorites File on my Computer.

4. Navigate to the place where you wish to save the file, and then click Save.

5. Close the Favorites window.
